Netflix limited thriller series Devil in Ohio is inspired by a true story
By Carla Davis
A new thriller series called Devil in Ohio will be premiering on Netflix in September, and the poster art looks appropriately scary. The limited series consists of eight episodes, and the trailer (which you can watch at the end of this article) seems pretty intriguing.
Netflix generally does a pretty good job with their horror/thriller series (Midnight Mass was the most recent one that captivated me personally).
Devil in Ohio is based on the best-selling novel by Daria Polatin, and the story is said to be inspired by real events that actually took place in Ohio. Polatin is also the showrunner and executive producer for the Netlix series.
The series focuses on Suzanne Mathis, a hospital psychiatrist who takes in a teenage girl who has escaped from a nearby cult. Emily Deschanel (Bones, Sleepy Hollow) appears as Suzanne, Madeline Arthur (Color Out of Space, Snowpiercer series) is the mysterious Mae, Sam Jaeger (The Handmaid’s Tale) is Suzanne’s husband Peter, Xaria Dotson, Alisha Newton and Naomi Tan are the Mathis’s daughters.
As we all know, film or series adaptations of novels often differ drastically, and never having read the book, its impossible to tell from the trailer how true to the original story the Netflix series is. Looking at the description of the book online, it looks like it is categorized as a YA novel, mostly told through the voice of the Mathis’s daughter Jules. Yet, everything I can tell about the series appears to focus more on Suzanne, so I guess we will have to wait until the series is available on Netflix to find out for sure.
What does the trailer for Netflix series Devil in Ohio tell us?
Although the brief trailer doesn’t really tell us a whole lot about the story of Devil in Ohio, those men are pretty intimidating, right? The first man Suzanne approaches is very pleasant and friendly until she asks him about the Dodd family, then he instantly changes and becomes menacing, telling her to go home.
All eight episodes of Devil in Ohio will be available on Netflix beginning September 2.
