Goodnight Mommy remake coming to Amazon Prime in September
By Carla Davis
2014 Austrian horror film Goodnight Mommy is receiving the remake treatment on Amazon Prime next month, and will be available to stream on September 16. The original film (directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala) was dark, chilling and genuinely frightening, so let’s hope the new version will stay on that trend.
Elias and Lukas are nine-year-old twins whose mother has been absent recently. They have been told that their mother is now coming home after getting cosmetic surgery, so it’s not surprising that she returns with her face covered in bandages, with only her eyes and mouth uncovered.
Naturally, her appearance somewhat frightens the boys, who are, after all, only children. But when Mommy starts acting a little strange, imposing rules that were never in place before, Elias and Lukas get a little nervous, and begin to think she may actually be an imposter, and not their mother at all.
There is no way to know as of yet if the remake of Goodnight Mommy will stick strictly to the original storyline, but I sure hope it does. It’s a film that starts out slowly, spending a lot of time with the twins as they wander through and play on the property near their house (a cornfield, a lake; all the places a nine-year-old boy would want to play). They are obviously very close, and it makes sense that they feel hurt when Mommy is unnecessarily cruel to Elias.
I refuse to give any spoilers for Goodnight Mommy, but things get very dark (and violent) later in this film. The young actors playing the twins are real-life twins Elias and Lukas Schwarz, and their performances are so great. Susanne Wuest played the mother, and honestly, these three actors made the entire movie, which is one of the reasons I was nervous about a remake.
Goodnight Mommy on Amazon Prime boasts a great cast
The new version features Naomi Watts as the mother, which made me feel better about the whole thing, because I think she has given some pretty great performances in her lifetime. And the two boys playing Elias and Lukas are twin brothers Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti, who both have some decent genre-related projects under their belts. Nicholas will appear as Danny Glick in the upcoming Salem’s Lot remake, and Cameron appears as Ryan Butcher in Amazon series The Boys.
The trailer also looks promising, with the appropriate amount of creepiness evident throughout. I am a big fan of the original Goodnight Mommy, and the trailer makes me want to watch the remake as well. Don’t let me down, Amazon Prime!
