The film Terrifier has acquired quite a cult following since its debut at Telluride Horror Show Film Festival in 2016. It wasn’t exactly critically acclaimed, though the special effects and some of the acting performances seemed to be appreciated.

David Howard Thornton’s appearance as Art the Clown is what viewers seemed to like the most about the gory film. Even horror fans who have never watched Terrifier know Art the Clown’s stark black and white makeup and evil grin. With the popularity of the first film, it just made sense to create a sequel.

At a staggering 138 minutes long, it was surprising to hear that Terrifier 2 would receive a limited theatrical run. Even more surprising was the $5.2 million the film brought in. The uncut version began streaming exclusively on Screambox on Halloween, and it will be available on 4K UHD exclusively at Best Buy, on Steelbook Blu-ray only at Walmart and Blu-ray and DVD as part of Cinedigm’s Screambox collection in December.

Terrifier 2 has managed to stay in the news thanks to its big box office receipts, and also its claims of audience members fainting or throwing up due to the extreme gore. Bloody Disgusting, who distributed the film, released some pretty entertaining news as well: They have submitted Terrifier 2 for Oscar consideration.

Will it actually end up as an Oscar nominee? Not a chance in hell, but as Bloody Disgusting said, “The thought of having members of the Academy endure an extreme unrated horror movie…that’s just too hilarious of an opportunity to pass up.”

Despite the popularity of the first film, the sequel’s performance seems to have surprised everyone. It was originally only supposed to play in a handful of theaters over one weekend, but it hit so big that it was released in 1,500 theaters on the weekend leading to Halloween. For a tiny little independent horror film, that’s a pretty big deal.
