Puppet horror film Abruptio features voice talents of James Marsters, Robert Englund and Sid Haig
By Carla Davis
The long-awaited puppet horror film Abruptio is screening at Cinejoy Virtual this month. Cinequest launched its online Cinejoy Virtual back in 2005, but it hit big during the pandemic, when most film festivals were forced to move to an online presence.
Cinejoy has maintained its popularity, and in fact, Cinequest has been moved to August this year, while Cinejoy is taking over the March spot on the schedule. This year’s Virtual Fest runs from March 1 through March 12, and will feature 155 films from all over the world.
One of those films is Abruptio, and wait until you hear the names of the big stars who have lent their voices to the unique film. Hellbent Pictures and Evan Marlowe have created a surrealistic blend of horror, comedy, action and, well…puppets. Abruptio took years to complete, with voice recording beginning back in 2015.
Abruptio made its debut at the Santa Monica Film Festival, where audiences were entertained by the cast of life-sized puppets. Of course, those puppets are voiced by a cast of well-known and well-loved talent.
The cast for Abruptio includes some genre legends
The voice cast includes James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Jordan Peele (Nope), Hana Mae Lee (The Babysitter), Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Christopher McDonald (The Faculty), Darren Darnborough (True Blood), Rich Fulcher (Rick and Morty) and the late, great Sid Haig (House of 1000 Corpses).
Abruptio tells the story of Les Hackel (Marsters), a down-on-his-luck guy who has lost his job and his girlfriend, and lives at home with his mom. When he discovers an incision on the back of his neck, his friend Danny (Peele) informs him that he has one too, and it’s actually a bomb.
Les is forced to complete horrible tasks, aided by a bunch of strange characters, all while trying to work out the mystery of what is going on around him. Hint: It includes a race of monstrous beings.
