The first moments of The Blackening trailer open in dramatic, attention-catching fashion. There’s the face of a menacing masked figure, a group of people screaming in terror, and someone pointing a gun before the words “They can’t all” pop up. Then there are more dramatic images of a frightened looking woman peering around a corner and another one screaming before “Die first” pops up.

Bravo, trailer. Your mission was accomplished in the first six seconds. I wanted to stick around and see what The Blackening might be about.

It quickly became obvious that it’s a spoof on scary movies similar to the Scary Movie franchise. It channels Saw, Evil Dead, even a smidge of Scream, and a bit of Cabin the Woods, just to name a few.

But it’s also clear it’s going to be its own fresh horror comedy. Let’s check it out, keeping our fingers crossed that the trailer doesn’t turn out to be one of those where, once you’ve seen it, you’ve basically seen the movie…or at least the very best bits.

It doesn’t show who the killer is, though. And now I’m dying to know. So I’ll definitely be checking it out as soon as it’s released, which will happen on June 16. Just in time for Juneteenth, which may mean The Blackening makes history as the first Juneteenth horror movie ever!

The Blackening synopsis

A group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherf*****g game.
