The Exorcist Reboot is an upcoming American supernatural horror film directed by David Gordon Green, with a screenplay he co-wrote with Peter Sattler, from a story he co-authored with Scott Teems and Danny McBride. It stars Leslie Odom Jr., Ellen Burstyn, Ann Dowd and Jennifer Nettles.

The film is part of the franchise based on the 1971 novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty and will serve as a direct sequel to William Friedkin’s 1973 film adaptation. While the film will retroactively affect continuity of the franchise, all of the previous installments will still remain canon to its premise. It is intended to be the first of three new Exorcist films and the sixth installment of The Exorcist franchise overall.

Ellen Burstyn is no stranger to the world of horror, having starred in the original Exorcist film as Chris MacNeil, the mother of the possessed Regan. In the new film, Burstyn is set to reprise her role as MacNeil, but in what capacity remains to be seen.

It was also recently announced by Above the Line that Linda Blair would be returning to reprise the role of Regan, the young girl who was possessed in the original film. Reportedly, Blair’s work on the film was completed in only a few days, so Regan will most likely not play a large part in the storyline.

Young actress Lidya Jewett has already made a name for herself with roles in shows like Black Lightning and movies like Hidden Figures. In the new Exorcist film, she’s set to play a character named Joan, but beyond that, little is known about her role.

Other cast members include Ann Dowd, Lidya Jewett, Olivia Marcum, Raphael Sbarge, Jennifer Nettles and Okwui Okpokwasili.

The Exorcist Reboot: Plot

The plot of the new version of The Exorcist has been kept under wraps, but we do know that it will follow a similar storyline to the original movie. The story will center around a mother seeking help for her daughter, who is possessed by a demonic entity. As she turns to the church for help, a team of priests will work to exorcise the demon from the young girl’s body. It is unclear whether the new film will be a direct remake of the original or a sequel, but it is expected to pay homage to the classic horror movie while also bringing its own unique twist to the story.
