Prime Video has announced the addition of a “horror dramedy” series called The Horror of Dolores Roach. The new series will make its Prime debut this summer.

Prime has really upped the quality of their horror content over the past year, with great original horror offerings such as Dead Ringers, Swarm, Goodnight Mommy, My Best friend’s Exorcism and Run, Sweetheart, Run. I personally enjoyed each of those films and series, so I intend to check out The Horror of Dolores Roach as well.

Another fact in the new series’ favor is that it is brought to us from Blumhouse (M3GAN, Welcome to Blumhouse). The Horror of Dolores Roach is an eight episode series, and will be available to watch for free if you are a member of Amazon Prime.

The new Prime series is based on a Spotify podcast with the same title, and is described by Prime as:

"A contemporary Sweeney-Todd inspired urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, cannibalism and survival of the fittest."

All eight episodes of The Horror of Dolores Roach will be able to watch on Prime July 7

Dolores has just been released from prison after being unjustly charged and serving a 16 year sentence. When she returns to Washington Heights, she reunites with her old friend Luis, who allows her to live in the basement beneath his shop. She also works out of the basement as a masseuse, but when her new life is threatened, she will do anything to survive.

The Horror of Dolores Roach has an interesting history. It began life as a one-woman Off-Broadway show called Empanada Loco. The show was written by Aaron Mark specifically for Daphne Rubin-Vega (who appeared in the original Broadway production of Rent) to perform. Horror fans may remember Rubin-Vega from her appearance as Detective Gloria Perez opposite Kevin Bacon in Wild Things.

Aaron Mark then adapted the show as a podcast (again starring Daphne Rubin-Vega), but added additional characters/actors, thus expanding it from a one-person show. Other actors who appeared on the podcast include Amy Ryan, Lea DeLaria, Dascha Polanco, Josh Hamilton and Donnell Rawlings.

And hey, Aaron Mark again adapted his show, this time as a series for Prime. I am not familiar at all with the story of The Horror of Dolores Roach, but based on the description given, I am assuming there is some cannibalism involved.

Stars include Justina Machado, Kita Updike, K. Todd Freeman and Alejandro Hernandez.
