Horror gamers will be familiar with the lore and the creepfest that make up the world of the Freddy’s franchise. Finally, this cult game classic will gain a wider audience of horror fans with the release of the Five Nights at Freddy’s  movie.

Based on the first videogame’s story, which was released in 2014, the movie will follow Mike Schmidt, a troubled security guard tasked to man the night shift at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.

The pizza place was once beloved by the town’s families and thus highly successful, but it has since fallen out of favor and on hard times. Now it is decrepit and run down with a dwindling clientele, and the fact that it’s inside a generally abandoned family entertainment center hasn’t helped either.

The first game, with its atmospheric music and excellent jump scares coupled with suspense-laden pacing, was so successful that Steel Wool Studios made nine more canon games in the franchise.

It also spun off to several more minor games, novelizations, as well as an anthology series!

What is Five Nights at Freddy’s about?

Just like in the first videogame, Schmidt discovers that the four animatronic mascots, Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy the Pirate, start to move. They then kill anyone that is still within the pizza resto’s after midnight.

Schmidt must survive the five nights’ work week from 12 AM to 6 AM, using the camera system and doors with lights to defend himself from the spooky and lethal mascots, possessed by the vengeful souls of the children who were killed at the pizza restaurant.

Jim Henson’s Creature Shop is on top of the monster animatronics for Five Nights at Freddy’s, while original game creator Scott Cawthon co-wrote the screenplay.

The directing duties falls on the capable shoulders of Emma Tammi, who also directed the excellent 1800s frontier supernatural thriller The Wind.

Josh Hutcherson stars as embattled night guard Schmidt. We last saw Hutcherson in The Hunger Games as Peeta Mellark, a role for which he won a People’s Choice Award. The movie also stars Mary Stuart Masterson and Matthew Lillard.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is produced by Blumhouse Pictures and will be released by Universal Pictures simultaneously in theaters and on Peacock in the USA on October 27.
