King Kong returns to action on Skull Island, an animated Netflix original
Fans of the Monsterverse got hyped when Legendary Pictures and Netflix announced that they were teaming up to release the next chapter, titled Skull Island.
Set to be released on June 22, the Skull Island series will bring anime-style action to a beloved franchise.
A team of explorers on a rescue mission get shipwrecked and have to deal with the gigantic monsters and, of course, confront the big kahuna and simia dei himself Kong.
The series is created, written, and executive produced by Brian Duffield, with Jacob Robinson, Brad Graeber, Jen Chambers and Thomas Tull. Voice actors who have been confirmed for the roles include Nicolas Cantu from Dora and Friends, Mae Whitman who’s known for Good Girls, as well as Betty Gilpin, and Benjamin Bratt.
The exciting trailer features the rescuers becoming the hunted as they encounter giant crabs, giant birds of prey, an aggressive giant crocodile, and the self-proclaimed Titan protector King Kong.
Fans of Legendary’s Monsterverse have been looking forward to another entry ever since the last TV show, Kong: The Animated Series, wrapped up way back in 2001.
This new series looks aptly gorgeous, drawn in the American anime style by Powerhouse Animation Studios, the same folks who have done landmark shows like Castlevania, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, and Blood of Zeus.
In fact, the characters and landscape themes on Skull Island really do bear an uncanny resemblance to the ones in other Powerhouse projects, especially on Castlevania. Will this new series from recreate the success of the Warren Ellis-penned juggernaut that Castlevania became?
There’s a good chance and the deck is pretty stacked in Powerhouse’s favor with such a landmark IP as King Kong, which is guaranteed to pull in devoted fans.
