The Rise of Spanish Horror Cinema
Spain has become well-known for making scary movies that are strange and unsettling. Filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro, Juan Antonio Bayona and Paco Plaza have become famous worldwide for their contributions to the horror genre.
Movies like The Orphanage (2007), The Devil’s Backbone (2001) and the [REC] series (2007-2014) have been highly praised by critics and have gained a devoted following.
Spanish horror films are particularly good at creating a feeling of tension and psychological discomfort. They explore themes of fear, being alone and supernatural elements. Instead of relying on excessive violence, these movies focus on suspense, the atmosphere and the characters’ mental state to create a feeling of horror.
