What’s up with season 12 of American Horror Story?
By Carla Davis
American Horror Story has always kept us on our toes, changing the storyline each season and refusing to follow the usual “rules” of television series. Well, it looks like season twelve will be continuing that trend.
For the first time in American Horror Story history, the storyline (titled Delicate) will be based on a book, upcoming thriller novel Delicate Condition, by Danielle Valentine. Delicate Condition is about a woman who becomes convinced that an evil being is working to ensure that her pregnancy never happens. The book has been compared to Rosemary’s Baby, which is pretty high praise.
American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy announced that production on the new season began in May of this year. It seems that the Writers Guild of America strike briefly halted production, but it was soon up and running again with Halley Feiffer serving as the showrunner and lone writer.
No exact premiere date has been announced by Murphy or FX as of today; all that has been said is that we can expect a summer debut, but at least part of the cast has been confirmed. As is usual with American Horror Story, the cast is a mix of returning actors and some who are new to the franchise.
Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Zachary Quinto an Denis O’Hare are returning, joined by Cara Delevingne, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Michaela Jae Rodriguez, Odessa A’Zion, Julie White, Matt Czuchry and Debra Monk. The most surprising cast member announced was Kim Kardashian.
No word yet as to whether Evan Peters will be returning after skipping season 11, probably due to his work on Netflix’s Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, but Sarah Paulson is on record as stating she will not be appearing in this season of American Horror Story.
Fans are no doubt wondering what the twist will be in the new season of American Horror Story, because there is always a twist! The most notorious one is probably American Horror Story: Roanoke, where the tone shifted from a documentary to the actors portraying the real-life characters.
But, for my money, the best twist was contained in the first season, American Horror Story: Murder House. Heck, that entire season was my favorite by far, but the big reveal about Violet punched me in the gut. **Spoiler alert: What Violet (and viewers) thought was a failed overdose attempt was instead fatal. Violet had become yet another ghost trapped in the murder house, and didn’t even know it.
Add to that the fact that this fractured family were made closer by their deaths, it was a twisty season all around. It’s a rare series in which the happy ending is only achieved after every single family member dies and comes back as ghosts.
