Great news from Starz – super-clever comedy horror series Shining Vale is returning just in time for Halloween! If you watched the first season, you are no doubt just as excited as I am. And if you haven’t watched it, get on it right away!

Why do I recommend the series? It’s genuinely scary at times, and genuinely funny throughout (even though it deals with serious subject matters such as mental health and trauma). And as a bonus, each episode includes Easter Eggs related to iconic horror movies like The Shining and The Changeling.

Shining Vale stars Courteney Cox (Scream) and Greg Kinnear (The Gift) as Pat and Terry Phelps, who moved to the town of Shining Vale to get their relationship back on track and reconnect with their teenaged kids Gaynor (Gus Berney) and Jake (Dylan Gage).

Pat’s mental health was on the edge as she struggled with guilt following her fling with a handyman at their prior apartment, and tried to fight writer’s block to produce a second novel. Her first was a hugely successful “mommy porn” story, and she was given a huge advance for a follow up.

She began to encounter a ghost in her house, a woman named Rosemary (Mira Sorvino), and then her second novel started to come together as she wrote frenetically while in a fugue state. As it turned out, Rosemary wanted to literally come back to life by taking over Pat’s body.

Season one ended on a cliffhanger, so there is a lot to explore in the second season. Here is how Starz summarizes what we can expect from season two:

"“…Pat and Terry Phelps struggle with reconnecting their broken family, mental illness, menopause, and trauma as their Connecticut home continues to reveal more of its haunted past. Something is lurking in the shadows in Shining Vale, and it’s more than just Rosemary.”"

When does Shining Vale season two premiere?

The second season will begin on Friday, October 13th, at 9:00 p.m. ET only on Starz. New subscribers can take advantage of their current special offer of $5 per month for the first three months by singing up through their website.
