28 Years Later poster depicts the Rage Virus' devastating body count

Danny Boyle and Alex Garland have reunited for 28 Years Later, a continuation of the beloved horror franchise that started with 2002's acclaimed 28 Days Later. Considered one of the best outbreak movies ever made, the news that we'd be getting an entirely new trilogy set in the same universe was met with significant praise.
Even better: 28 Years Later is just the first in a planned sequel trilogy that will continue with 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta. The two films were shot back-to-back, and the first will be released exclusively in theaters in June 2025.
On Friday, Sony shared the first official poster for the film, depicting a bunch of red skulls (a reference to the many lives taken by the Rage Virus) composed in the shape of a biohazard symbol above the tagline "Time didn't heal anything."
The 2025 film will pick up after the events of 28 Weeks Later. Though Boyle and Garland did not write or direct the 2007 sequel, they did executive produce. Decades might have passed, but the Rage Virus hasn't been stopped and continues to plague survivors.
Cillian Murphy has been confirmed to return to reprise his role as Jim, though details of his participation are being kept under wraps. Joining him in the cast are Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and Jack O'Connell.
1428 Elm previously reported some plot details shared by Fiennes, who confirmed that the new movie will follow a young boy trying to find a doctor to help his sick mother.
While pandemic horror movies are abundant, especially in a post-COVID world, it's worth noting that the duo of Boyle and Garland reinvented the genre in 2002. The impact of 28 Days Later can be felt in every zombie and viral outbreak movie made since, and the expectations for the upcoming trilogy are sky-high.
28 Years Later will be released in theaters on June 20, 2025.
