Body horror is all the rage in the horror genre right now and 2025 has multiple films within the subgenre lined up, which makes sense after how successful last year's The Substance became. We've got the new film from Dave Franco and Alison Brie releasing this summer and the brutal Cinderella re-imagining The Ugly Stepsister will be out in April.
This week, horror fans were treated to several new trailers for highly-anticipated movies like the aforementioned films and the long-awaited first look at The Toxic Avenger reboot. Check them out below.
The Toxic Avenger
The 2023 black comedy film The Toxic Avenger, a reboot of the original splatter film franchise of the same name, is finally releasing in theaters later this year after an arduous hunt to find a suitable distributor due to the film's gory content.
At one point, there were fears this movie would never see the light of day but based on the teaser we're glad that's not the case. Peter Dinklage plays the mutant vigilante Toxie and as shown in the video, this movie is going to be jaw-dropping.
In theaters, August 29.
The Ugly Stepsister
The classic Cinderella fairy tale takes a brutal turn in The Ugly Stepsister, a body horror movie that pits two stepsisters against one another as they compete for the prince's hand in marriage. Except unlike in the original story, these siblings are willing to go to stomach-churning lengths to "perfect" their appearance. As the trailer shows, the girls are not alright.
The trailer seems to mine ample inspiration from the marketing campaign for last year's hit body horror The Substance, mimicking its bold simplicity and favoring tactile sounds versus dialogue. But where Coralie Fargeat was tapping into modern sensibilities, Emilie Blichfeldt reminds us that the pervasive horrors created by the beauty industry have been dogging women since the 19th century.
Exclusively in theaters on April 18, will stream on Shudder at a later date.
Together
Real-life Hollywood couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie star in this creepy body horror film distributed by Neon. We've heard of codependent couples, but just how close can these two really get? The trailer is smart in what it doesn't show, and, like with The Ugly Stepsister trailer, spends more time promoting interesting visuals than dialogue over-explaining the plot.
We get the gist just by seeing an eerie child's drawing of two dogs merging together and several frightening snippets like Franco's character pulling a long hair out between his teeth and the final frame where their eyeballs look like they're dancing toward one another. Together received a lot of attention at Sundance earlier this year and has become one of my most anticipated of 2025.
In theaters, August 1.
