Vampires vs. the Bronx

Netflix has a seemingly endless array of movies to choose from at any given moment, which can give even the most decisive movie-watcher a hard time when trying to pick something to watch. If you're in the mood for a horror movie that doubles as a comedy, the streamer has a decent selection, with popular titles like The Babysitter and last year's It's What's Inside.

But Netflix is also home to a few underrated gems that were very well-received when they first released, yet aren't often recommended. Here are three you should check out the next time you're in the mood for a mixture of laughs and scares!

Little Evil (2017)

  • Writer/Director: Eli Craig
  • Cast: Evangeline Lilly, Adam Scott, Bridget Everett, Owen Atlas, Kyle Bornheimer, Chris D'Elia, Donald Faison, Carla Gallo, Tyler Labine, Brad Williams, Clancy Brown, and Sally Field

With everyone raving over Adam Scott's performance in the hit Apple TV+ show Severance, now would be the perfect time to revisit his 2017 horror comedy Little Evil, about a man who starts to think his stepson is actually the spawn of Satan.

Gary (Scott) does his best to bond with his new wife's (Evangeline Lilly) son, Lucas, but that's much easier said than done. And when Lucas starts acting up in school and doing other strange things, Gary thinks there is something evil going on, but his mother begs to differ.

Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020)

  • Director: Oz Rodriguez
  • Writers: Oz Rodriguez and Blaise Hemingway
  • Cast: Jaden Michael, Gerald W. Jones III, Gregory Diaz IV, and Sarah Gadon

Trying to save your neighborhood from restructuring is one thing, but trying to fend off a horde of vampires? That's a different type of challenge, one faced by a group of teenagers who must band together to keep the Bronx safe from the encroaching horde of nocturnal blood-suckers.

The young trio of actors at the center of Vampires vs. the Bronx have a great sense of camaraderie and chemistry between them, making for an entertaining and hilarious watch. Yes, it often feels familiar and leans heavily into nostalgia, but the film is a pitch-perfect blend of comedy, good vibes, and a dash of horror.

The Trip (2021)

  • Director/Writer: Tommy Wirkola
  • Cast: Aksel Hennie and Noomi Rapace

Noomi Rapace and Aksel Hennie star as a husband and wife in this Norwegian movie about a couple preparing to end their marriage in the most violent way possible. With their marriage in shambles, Lars and Lisa plan a cabin trip, with both of them concocting plans to murder the other in exchange for life insurance.

But things become even more complicated once they become violent at the cabin. First, their fight is between them, but when Lars' friend Viktor shows up, along with a new threat, the violence soon spirals out of control. The Trip is from director Tommy Wirkola, known for his distinctive style. His previous films include Violent Night, Dead Snow, and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.
