4 overrated Halloween movies you should skip this spooky season
As Halloween approaches, many of us are on the hunt for the perfect flick to set the mood. Something creepy and full of thrills. However, not every movie deserves your precious viewing time. In fact, some beloved Halloween films are more overrated than spine-tingling!
This year, we're calling out four overrated Halloween movies that are more trick than treat. They're not necessarily horrible movies. They just don't deserve a spot on your watchlist this spooky season because they might not give you the chills you're after. See what Halloween flicks made our list below!
Terrifier movies (2016-)
Oh! People are not going to like that I put the Terrifier movies on our list. I would like to apologize to all the Terrifier fans out there, but these movies are way overhyped. My main issue with these films is that they focus more on shock value and on how gory they can be. Yes, it's a slasher, but I've watched many slashers that actually have a plot. The Terrifier movies lack a well-rounded story, and that's why I'm not a huge fan.
Three Terrifier movies have been released so far, with a Terrifier 4 in development. They all center around the silent and sadistic killer Art the Clown, who goes around the fictional town of Miles County terrorizing its inhabitants.
Halloween (1978)
Don't get me wrong! Halloween is definitely a horror classic, and no one can deny the influence it had on the horror genre. However, some aspects of this movie may feel dated to contemporary audiences. Some might find it slow-paced and not as scary by modern standards. So, if you're looking for a movie to watch that'll deliver on all the chills and thrills, Halloween might not be for you.
The slasher follows Michael Myers, a psychotic killer wearing a white mask who escapes from a mental institution and makes his way back to his hometown of Haddonfield to stalk a teenage babysitter and her friends.
The Exorcist (1973)
The Exorcist has been described as one of the scariest movies ever made, and yes, it still remains a highly influential and important film in the horror genre. However, I'd have to argue that this movie does not hold up as effectively when compared to more modern horror offerings. Honestly, its outdated special effects take away from its scariness. However, I can understand why it was a groundbreaking film at the time. It was one of the first of its kind.
The supernatural horror flick revolves around a desperate mother who calls on the help of two priests to perform an exorcism on her demonically possessed daughter.
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
The Blair Witch Project was praised for its innovative found-footage style when it was released back in 1999 and was even credited with popularizing the found-footage genre. Many people also consider it to be one of the scariest movies of the '90s, which makes sense seeing as though it wasn’t like anything anyone had ever seen at the time.
However, it just doesn't hold up in modern times, in my opinion. There's just a whole bunch of talking and minimal action in this film. Honestly, the scariest part of the movie is the last scene. I feel like this is the type of film where, in order for you to be scared, you had to have seen it when it first came out or around that time. The horror genre has evolved significantly since the late '90s, making it challenging for some contemporary viewers to experience The Blair Witch Project's scare factor.
Here's the movie's plot via IMDb:
"Three film students vanish after traveling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind."
