4 shows for horror fans to keep an eye on in December 2024
By Mads Lennon
The end of another year is upon us, but there are still plenty of television shows and movies to watch before it officially ends. Surprisingly, December is packed with exciting genre films and new series, like the highly-anticipated return of the blockbuster Netflix series Squid Game and Robert Eggers' next film, Nosferatu.
On the television side specifically, horror fans will be pleased to know that the Dexter prequel series is making its debut on Paramount+ with Showtime, and there are a couple of other titles to be on the lookout for. The shows listed below vary from horror to sci-fi and everything in between, bound to keep viewers entertained between holidays.
Earth Abides (MGM+, Dec. 1)
A limited series based on George R. Stewart's novel, Earth Abides is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama premiering December 1 on MGM+. With From season 3 finished, the premium cabler has lined up its next science fiction show, featuring Heels actor Alexander Ludwig in the leading role.
Earth Abides follows the only remaining survivors after an "unprecedented virulence" wipes out the majority of human life on Earth. As humanity veers toward total extinction, a small group of survivors struggle to make ends meet. Jessica Frances Duke, Aaron Tveit, Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll, Elyse Levesque, and Luisa D'Oliveira also star. Billed as a six-episode limited series, Earth Abides will also stream on the Australia service Stan.
Squid Game (Netflix, Dec. 26)
Over three years later, Netflix's massively successful Korean series Squid Game is finally returning with new episodes! The streaming service previously confirmed that the show would return, followed by revealing that the third season would also be the last.
In season 2, which drops the day after Christmas, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is back and preparing to re-enter the games to expose the Front Man and the sinister truth behind the deadly competition. Can he work fast enough to warn the other contestants, or will he end up working alone? And can he actually survive another round of these twisted games?
Creature Commandos (Max, Dec. 5)
The first entry into James Gunn's official new take on the DC Universe, Creature Commandos kicks off the Gods and Monsters saga. It loosely follows the events of Max and Gunn's Peacemaker series, with Viola Davis returning to reprise her role as Amanda Waller.
This time, Waller recruits a black ops team of monsters, such as Eric Frankenstein, Circe, Clayface, and the Bride of Frankenstein. While not billed as a horror series, Creature Commandos features characters who pay homage to many classic Universal Monsters. All seven episodes were written by Gunn, and the first two episodes will debut on December 5, followed by one new episode a week until January 9.
Dexter: Original Sin (Paramount+ with Showtime, Dec. 15)
The jury is still out on whether we need another Dexter spinoff series, especially a prequel that follows serial killer Dexter Morgan during his time as a teenager and a budding murderer. But we'll find out soon enough when the new series debuts on Paramount+ with Showtime this December.
At the very least, seeing younger versions of popular characters like Debra Morgan, Angel Batista, Vince Masuka, and Maria LaGuerta will be exciting. We saw many Dexter flashbacks during the original series, making it hard to imagine the prequel covering new ground. And at least Michael C. Hall is returning to narrate Dexter's inner voice.
