Still craving more after a Sinners summer? Let's dive into other vampire movies you can find on streaming services right now.
Blade (All of them)
Blade is a unique character—a vampire hunter who is also a vampire. He is a human-vampire hybrid, often referred to as a "Daywalker," who targets evil vampires. The original film, released in 1998, introduces Blade as he raids a vampire rave club owned by the sinister Deacon Frost. Unbeknownst to Blade, Frost is scheming to ignite a war between vampires and humans because his kind—artificial vampires—are deemed socially inferior, and they are ready to take control.
Blade delivers a warning message to Frost, "You tell him it's open season on all suck-heads," beginning a bloodbath of epic proportions, featuring plenty of sword-wielding action with the ever-serious Wesley Snipes in the lead role. Over the years, Blade has garnered a cult following, and the success of the first film led to two sequels: Blade II in 2002, directed by the acclaimed Guillermo del Toro, and Blade: Trinity in 2004. Watch the entire trilogy on Paramount+.
The Hunger (1983)
Let's take a trip back to the 80s, with the erotic horror film and goth subculture favorite, The Hunger. The story revolves around Miriam Blaylock (played by Catherine Deneuve), an ancient vampire who has promised her human lovers eternal life for centuries. Her current partner, John (played by David Bowie), is an 18th-century cellist whom she met in France. Their life seems perfect as this glamorous vampire couple thrives in the New York City nightclub scene. However, things take a turn when John begins to age... daily. Now over 200 years old, he realizes that Miriam’s promise is only partially true: she guarantees immortality, but not eternal youth.
Enter Dr. Sarah Roberts, played by Susan Sarandon, a gerontology researcher who unwittingly becomes entangled in Miriam and John's secret. Although many critics claimed the film was lacking in certain areas, such as writing and special effects, it has become a beloved favorite for many, especially those who appreciate 80s culture and, of course, David Bowie, the ultimate glam vampire. You can watch it for free on Tubi.
Cronos (1992)
Guillermo del Toro has a fondness for vampires. He has directed several films featuring vampire-like creatures; however, none of these works compares to his bloodsucking masterpiece, Cronos.
This film was del Toro's first feature, and it made a strong impression from the very beginning. The story follows Jesús Gris, an elderly antique dealer, who discovers a 460-year-old mechanism designed by a 16th-century alchemist inside the base of an archangel statue. Little does he know there's an insect entombed within the device and meshed with the internal clockwork, which filters his blood. Soon, Gris begins to regain his youth and vitality, but develops a thirst for blood. A rich and dying businessman, Dieter de la Guardia, has been hunting for the mechanism for himself and has sent his thuggish nephew Angel (played by Ron Pealman) to recover it from the unsuspecting Gris.
Cronos is a unique take on the vampire genre, diverging from the conventional elements typically associated with vampires. The film skillfully balances horror and drama while exploring themes of religion and mortality. Since its release, it has been hailed as one of the greatest horror films and one of the best Spanish-language films of all time, earning a place in The Criterion Collection. You can watch it with an HBO MAX subscription.
The Vourdalak (2023)
This Gothic French film is based on Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy's short story, The Family of the Vourdalak. Set in 18th-century France, Marquis Jacques Saturnin du Antoine is robbed and receives advice from a stranger to seek help from a man named Gorcha, who may assist him in finding a horse. However, Gorcha is unable to help until he returns from fighting the Turks, who had pillaged their village the previous month. He warns Jacques that if he is not back in six days, he will be dead. If he does return in six days, he will have become a vourdalak, a vicious vampire from Slavic folklore, and Jacques and his family must turn him away.
As expected, Gorcha does return, but he does not look well. Jacques soon realizes that his quest for a new horse has led him into a messy, bloody, and chaotic situation.
Additionally, there is another notable adaptation of Tolstoy's story worth watching: Black Sabbath, an anthology film by Mario Bava that features Boris Karloff. It adapts the tale in its second segment, "I Wurdulak." Both films are available to watch for free on Tubi.
Day Shift (2022)
Bud Jablonski (played by Jamie Foxx) is a hard-working blue-collar father in L.A. who struggles to make ends meet. Posing as a pool cleaner, Bud actually hunts and destroys vampires, operating independently rather than as part of the vampire-hunting union. After discussing his financial troubles with his old army friend, "Big" John Elliott, Bud learns he can rejoin the union under certain conditions due to his history of code violations. He must work the day shift, which pays less, and he must be supervised by a union representative, played by Dave Franco.
Hot on their trail is a female vampire determined to restore the old order of vampire colonies and create an army.
Filled with thrilling action sequences, Day Shift is an entertaining watch for those looking for a mix of laughs and gore. Michael Ordoña of the Los Angeles Times calls the film a "damned delight" and highlights its mash-up of multiple genres—including horror, buddy cop, cartel drama, bounty hunter, martial arts, and action comedy. While this blend might overwhelm some viewers, it can be a delight for others. You can watch it with a subscription to Netflix.
