Sometimes, you want to watch a horror movie that's scary but not overly bloody or gory. That's where PG-13 horror movies come into play. Many PG-13 horror movies can still be frightening without an over-reliance on blood and guts. These films rely more on tension, jump scares, and often supernatural or paranormal entities.
Hulu is home to several great scary PG-13 flicks you can watch with younger teen viewers without worrying about intense violence or sexual content. Here is a list of five PG-13 movies we love streaming on Hulu.
The Invitation (2022)
The Invitation is more of a thriller and a gothic romance than a traditional horror film, and knowing this beforehand will make your viewing experience more enjoyable. An ideal movie for fans of Dracula and Crimson Peak, The Invitation centers on Evie (Nathalie Emmanuel) and a DNA test revealing the identity of a long-lost cousin.
Her new family invites her to a wedding in the countryside, and Evie finds herself seduced by the charming host. But further exploration leads her to uncover the dark secrets of her aristocratic family and the unnerving source of their wealth.
Run (2020)
Sarah Paulson stars in this unnerving psychological thriller directed by Aneesh Chaganty (Searching), which is actually part of Chaganty's Searching film series, including Missing.
Teenage Chloe Sherman (Keira Allen) has been raised in nearly complete isolation by her overbearing mother, Diane (Paulson). As Chloe ages, she begins questioning some of her mother's strict rules and regulations, leading her to a terrifying and disturbing discovery.
It Lives Inside (2023)
It Lives Inside is a supernatural coming-of-age horror movie about an Indian-American teenager struggling to fit in with her peers. Eager to fit in, Samidha starts going by "Sam" and attempts to reject her heritage to try and be more like the other students at her school. But when her friends picks up a demonic influence, Sam's heritage could be the only thing to help her defeat it and save her friend.
No One Will Save You (2023)
Kaitlyn Dever (The Last of Us) stars as a lonely and outcasted seamstress who spends most of her time inside her house on the outskirts of town. When aliens invade her home, Brynn finds herself in a fight for her life. Given the film's minimal dialogue, much of the critical praise was heaped on Dever's performance for portraying such strong emotions with few words.
Umma (2022)
Sandra Oh plays a single mother living on an isolated farm in America with her daughter. When her mother's ashes arrive from Korea, Amanda (Oh) begins to feel like her mom, or Umma, is haunting her. The film received mixed reviews, but most critics agree that Oh is excellent in the leading role.
