5 scary werewolf movies and shows on Netflix right now
By Mads Lennon
Netflix has added some great horror content to its catalog this Halloween season. Among the newest offerings are the acclaimed film It's What's Inside and the upcoming Sam Raimi-produced title Don't Move.
But one of the underlooked movies releasing this week is the French film Family Pack, a humorous take on a popular board game featuring werewolves. Thinking about werewolves, the following list includes a few other popular titles now streaming on Netflix featuring furry monsters.
Family Pack (2024)
A charming new horror comedy film, Family Pack is a French movie from director François Uzan inspired by the popular game The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow. In a Jumanji-like twist, a family playing the game is suddenly transported back in time to the "real" Miller's Hollow and soon finds their lives in peril as they're hunted by a werewolf. Just like in the game, they will have to work together to find and kill the real werewolf before it finds them first.
Viking Wolf (2022)
This Norwegian film released on Netflix in 2022 is a surprisingly effective little thriller with decent enough gore and VFX. It centers on a teen girl who witnesses something horrific at a party and then begins to experience strange visions and desires, and you can guess where things go from there.
Van Helsing (2004)
Despite poor critical reception upon its release in 2004 and some rather dated visual effects, Van Helsing has managed to garner a devoted fanbase in recent years. It's campy and tons of fun, with all the stuff you'd expect from a movie like this one, including epic castles and lots of classic Universal monsters. An ideal "popcorn" movie, you should give Van Helsing a chance. At the very least, it has a great cast with Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale as the leads.
Legacies (2018-2022)
Using the word "scary" to describe this spin-off series from The Vampire Diaries and The Originals might be stretching things a little bit, but it all depends on your definition of scary. An adult might not find much to fear in Legacies, but younger viewers might get a little creeped out from time to time.
This series follows Hope Mikaelson, the rare "tri-brid" and daughter of Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan), as she attends the Salvatore Boarding School with other teenage supernaturals like herself. And yes there are references and cameos from the parent series! Not only does Legacies feature werewolves, but there are also witches, vampires, and all kinds of other creatures running around.
Sirius the Jaeger (2018)
Anime fans should check out this series from director Masahiro Andō. It's a little older, having premiered back in 2018, but with only 12 episodes Sirius the Jaeger is a short and frightful thrill ride about vampire hunters in the 1930s. And yes, one of the main characters is a werewolf with a vendetta against said vampires for destroying his former home.
