30. Extraordinary Tales

Release Date: 2015

Directed by Raul Garcia

Screenplay by Raul Garcia, Stephan Roelants

Based on stories by Edgar Allan Poe

Starring Christopher Lee, Bela Lugosi, Guillermo del Toro, Julian Sands

Christopher Walken plays the Archangel Gabriel searching for an evil soul on earth.

This isn’t so much as a movie as it is an anthology of five animated short films based on separate stories by the creative genius Edgar Allan Poe. The included tales are “The Fall of the House of Usher”, “The Tell-Tale Heart”, “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar”, “The Masque of the Red Death”, and “The Pit and the Pendulum”.

The highlight of it all for me was that it featured one of Christopher Lee’s final performances, as his work as a narrator was just as stellar as his acting career. It was interesting to see how they worked in old recordings of Bela Lugosi as well.

You probably won’t be watching this over and over unless you’re a huge fan of Poe, so I wouldn’t recommend buying a DVD. But when it’s available to stream on Netflix, as it is now, I suggest you go ahead and watch it.
