This is hands down the best A24 horror film to be released this year.

We've seen a bunch of great horror movies hit theaters in 2025 so far, including Heart Eyes, Final Destination Bloodlines, Sinners, Until Dawn, Companion, 28 Years Later and I Know What You Did Last Summer. And what’s even better is that there’s still so much more horror content to come, with highly anticipated releases like Weapons, The Black Phone 2, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, Him, Keeper and more on the way.

But while major studios are flooding the genre with sequels and big-budget scares, A24 is continuing to carve its own eerie path. The indie powerhouse dropped three horror films in 2025. They are Opus, Death of a Unicorn and Bring Her Back. However, only one of these movies is actually worth watching. That film is Bring Her Back.

I'm not saying the other two films were bad. In fact, both Opus and Death of a Unicorn had intriguing concepts and moments of creativity. But if we're talking about which film truly delivers a memorable and thought-provoking experience, Bring Her Back rises above the rest. It's the type of horror film that evokes a range of emotions throughout. One minute, you're sad, overwhelmed by the characters' grief and vulnerability. Next, you're on edge, caught in the grip of its relentless tension and eerie and unsettling atmosphere.

You know those films that stay with you long after you've watched them? Bring Her Back is definitely one of those, haunting your thoughts and emotions well beyond the final scene. Described as a mix of supernatural and psychological horror, Bring Her Back comes from Danny and Michael Philippou. They both directed the film, while Danny co-wrote the script with Bill Hinzman.

The story revolves around two step-siblings, Andy and Piper, who are sent to live with a new foster mother named Laura after the sudden death of their father. At first, Laura seems kind and nurturing, but it quickly becomes clear that she’s deeply disturbed and hiding something sinister. As strange occurrences begin to unfold, the siblings uncover Laura’s desperate obsession with bringing her dead daughter back, no matter the cost.

Billy Barratt (Invasion) takes on the role of Andy, while Sora Wong plays Piper. Also in the cast are Golden Globe winner Sally Hawkins (Wonka, The Shape of Water) as Laura, and Jonah Wren Phillips (Human Error) as Oliver, Laura's foster son.

Honestly, no one should be surprised that such a deeply affecting and unsettling film comes from this talented twin brother duo, as Danny and Michael are the same people behind the hit supernatural horror Talk to Me. Yes, I'm talking about the film that saw a troubled teenage girl confronting terrifying forces beyond her understanding after messing with a mysterious embalmed hand. I'd argue that Bring Her Back is even more disturbing than that movie, and that's saying a lot, considering how chilling and emotionally gripping Talk to Me was.

Creating disturbing movies that linger in your mind seems to be the Philippou brothers' signature, and with Bring Her Back, they don't hold back at all. This film is extremely gory and includes many intense scenes of violence. It's definitely not for the faint of heart or anyone sensitive to graphic content. Yet, beneath the blood and scares lies a deeply emotional story about grief, loss, and the desperate lengths people will go to in order to hold on to those they love.

That's what makes Bring Her Back more than just your typical horror film. While it's not the scariest horror movie you'll ever see, its strength lies in the emotional depth and psychological complexity of its story. If you haven't already checked out this film yet, you can do so by renting or purchasing it on digital platforms. It's also expected to eventually make its way to HBO Max, as that's where most A24 titles are streamed after their theatrical runs.
