Terrible news, everyone.
After announcing that AMC theaters would be showing the first three Halloween films over a series of three consecutive nights this upcoming weekend, an endeavor sponsored by the upcoming release of Halloween: The Game, something has gone awry. We reported to you more than a week ago that the announcement had been made for such plans, and we were certainly not alone. The news got coverage from multiple outlets and inspired a lot of online excitement and chatter relating to the impending release of the game, the films, and the spooky season itself.
Unfortunately, it would appear that in between then and now, some nondescript error or falling out has occurred, because it now looks as though AMC will not be showing any of the first three Halloween films on the big screen this weekend after all.
What’s most befuddling about all of this is that there has been zero information from any of the parties involved since that initial announcement. As soon as it was revealed that the films would be coming to AMC over Labor Day weekend, pages for each of the films, stylized individually as “Halloween, presented by Halloween: The Game,” were added to the AMC website and app. However, there were no showtimes listed, simply a reminder of when the films would be being re-released. Those pages existed in that capacity well into this week, which immediately struck me as off. After all, more often than not, AMC updates show times weeks in advance. When perusing various specific AMC theaters, I could see that showtimes were listed for dozens of other films, but not these Halloween re-releases.
Then, today, mere hours ago, the pages for the Halloween re-releases were deleted entirely. If you follow the links back to what were once those pages, you’ll simply get an error message. Given that the films were supposed to begin playing tomorrow, it now seems pretty definitive that these screenings are not happening. Apparently, Regal Cinemas is now playing the films, which I guess is something.
What exactly happened here? My guess would be that the announcement of the screenings jumped the gun a bit and the finer details of any deal between the team at Halloween: The Game and AMC had yet to actually be finalized when details were initially unveiled to the public, and then everything just failed to come together in the short span of time between now and then. Whatever the reason, it sucks that this has happened and it sucks even more that all parties involved have failed to keep up any kind of coherent communication or transparency with audiences who were excited to see the films on the big screen.
