Starz has recently unveiled its December offerings, and surprisingly, there are several horror movies coming to the streamer next month. Surprising because it's Christmastime, and often horror gets shafted this time of year, but not at Starz!
In addition to titles like Blair Witch and Renfield, Borderlands, the 2024 sci-fi action comedy film from director Eli Roth, based on the popular video game of the same name, will make its streaming debut later this month, on Christmas Day, to be exact.
Blair Witch movies
- Blair Witch (2016)
- The Blair Witch Project
- Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2
One of the most iconic found-footage horror films of all time is coming to Starz on December 1, along with the far more divisive sequel and 2016 remake. In recent years, though, the 2016 film in particular has been reevaluated, and some people think it's even scarier than the 1999 movie. I'm not sure I agree, but starting in December, you can watch all three of them and decide for yourself.
The original Blair Witch Project is filmed in a mockumentary style, following a group of students hiking through Burkittsville, Maryland, searching for information about the infamous local legend. At the time of release, the marketing for this movie was so intensely realistic that many people believed it to be a true story. All three of these movies will exclusively stream on Starz.
The Crazies (Dec. 8)
We all know that remakes, especially horror movie remakes, are often mishandled and can end up being, well, to put it bluntly—really bad. But this remake of the 1973 film is worth a shot because it manages to be one of the best horror remakes maybe of all time.
Directed by Breck Eisner, The Crazies isn't necessarily better than the George A. Romero classic, but it's still surprisingly smart and a very effective thrill ride. After a mysterious toxin is released in a fictional Iowa town, the residents slowly turn into bloodthirsty murderers.
Renfield (Dec. 9)
This Universal Pictures film about Dracula's servant Renfield is fittingly coming to Starz in the same month Robert Eggers' Nosferatu hits theaters. The two films could not be more different in tone, as Renfield leans heavily into action and comedy, but there are some obvious thematic connections between the two. Renfield flew under the radar a bit last year, but it's a lot of fun. Funnily enough, Nicholas Hoult stars in both this film and Nosferatu.
Starz is also advertising its "Black Horror Block," a collection of films that are already streaming and will continue to until at least December 31.
