A new slasher movie will make a bloody mess on Shudder this March! RLJE Films and Shudder present Bloody Axe Wound, a genre-bending horror film about a teenager who must contend with the fact that her father is an infamous serial killer.
Written and directed by Matthew John Lawrence, Bloody Axe Wound will finally make its streaming debut on March 21, exclusively on Shudder. The film was previously released theatrically on December 27.
Set in the fictional town of Clover Falls, teen Abbie Bladecut (Sari Arambulo) finds herself torn between her first crush and following in the footsteps of her family's murderous legacy. Her dad, Roger Bladecut (Billy Burke), has become notorious because of his business of filming gruesome murders and then selling the tapes. As Abbie gets pulled further in two different directions, she begins to question if following in her dad's footsteps is the right decision for her.
Bloody Axe Wound features several genre vets, including Billy Burke and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Horror fans will recognize Burke from films like Lights Out. Morgan is well known for his portrayal of Negan in The Walking Dead franchise. The cast also includes Dexter: Original Sin star Molly Brown as Abbie's friend and love interest, Sam.
Morgan and his wife/fellow actress Hilarie Burton Morgan produced the film under their Mischief Farm banner, with Cassandra Del Viscio and Mary Stuart Masterson producing for Off Label HV. Meg Mortimer executive produces. Liz DeCesare, Jordan Manekin, Eric Knapp, Mackenzie Luzzi, and Sarah Fairchild also produce.
Critical reception to the film has been mixed, but it seems like frequent horror movie watchers enjoyed it more than most critics. Joe Lipsett of Horror Queers Podcast calls it a "fun meta horror comedy" featuring "charming (queer) leads."
Bloody Axe Wound starts streaming on Shudder on Friday, March 21. But if you don't want to wait that long to watch it, you can also rent or buy the movie via digital retailers like Amazon, YouTube, Apple, and Google Play.
