Presence (Theaters, Jan. 24)
Steven Soderbergh's latest film is a supernatural thriller based on the concept of following a haunting from the perspective of the entity doing the haunting. Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, and Julia Fox star. Premiering at Sundance last year, Presence has received praise from critics, who have called the film a clever slow burn.
Your Monster (Max, Jan. 24)
Scream star Melissa Barrera gets to flex her comedic chops in this endearing romantic comedy about a woman who falls for the literal monster in her closet. Struggling in the aftermath of a bad breakup, Laura (Barrera) is forced to return to her childhood home, where she meets Monster (Tommy Dewey) and they bond over their shared love of theater. Sexy, bloody, and funny, Your Monster is a great movie to watch headed into Valentine's Day season.
Grafted (Shudder, Jan. 15 )
Wei is outcasted at her new school by her popular cousin and her friends due to her awkward demeanor and the facial deformity she's had since birth. Desperate to change her appearance, Wei uses her late father's research to create a unique and experimental skin-grafting procedure. As you might expect, things don't pan out how Wei expected, leading her down an increasingly dark path.
Bystanders (VOD, Jan. 21)
A frat party goes terribly wrong (when do they not?) in Epic Pictures' twisted new horror movie. Abby is ready to dance the night away with her friends at a house party, but the fraternity has other plans, namely a twisted hunting game where the girls are used as sport. They drug their drinks and force them to run for their lives, leaving Abby to do whatever she can to survive. When she crosses paths with a dangerous couple who have their own agenda, Abby is faced with a difficult choice of whether to trust them or attempt to make it out alone.
Werewolf Game (VOD, Jan. 21)
The Werewolf game continues to be a seemingly endless source of inspiration for horror filmmakers as we're getting yet another take on it this month with Werewolf Game. Previous films with a similar premise include Werewolves Within and Netflix's Family Pack. Directed by Cara Claymore and Jackie Payne, Werewolf Game's biggest selling point is the fact it features one of the last on-screen performances from the late legendary actor Tony Todd. In this movie, 12 strangers are kidnapped and forced to play along in the twisted game that puts a murderous spin on the party game.
Into the Deep (VOD, Jan. 24)
Another shark attack thriller arrives on VOD this week, this one starring Hooper himself, Richard Dreyfuss (Jaws), which is pretty cool! Scout Taylor Compton, who starred in Rob Zombie's Halloween reboot, also stars. When a pair of pirates hijack a tourist ship to track down missing drugs, everyone on board is forced to go with them into shark-infested waters.
Zombie Strain (VOD, Jan. 23)
A unique take on the zombie apocalypse drama probably worth watching for its ideas alone, Zombie Strain is set in a world riddled with the undead, but a group of stoners have bigger problems to worry about. They make a wild discovery about a marijuana strain and soon must contend with mistrust sowing discord among them while zombies press in from the outside, forcing them to choose when threat they want to contend with to survive.
