Charli xcx is one of the most famous pop stars in the world right now, but she's about to transition to the world of film with multiple projects currently in development. The most recent news regarding her budding acting career is perhaps the most exciting yet, as Variety reports that Charli xcx will star in and produce an upcoming film from the legendary Japanese horror director Takashi Miike, best known for films like Audition and Ichi the Killer.
Little is known about the story thus far, but horror fans know that Miike is famous for the graphic violence present in his movies. Audition is often ranked as one of the most disturbing horror movies of all time. Ross Evans (How to Save a Marriage) will write the script.
The Brat singer is also starring in and producing an upcoming A24 movie, The Moment, through her Studio365 banner. The Moment is a mockumentary about a pop star also starring Alexander Skarsgård and Rosanna Arquette.
Additionally, Charli xcx will star in the American remake of Faces of Death alongside Stranger Things' Dacre Montgomery, Josie Totah, Jermaine Fowler, and Barbie Ferreira. Her other acting projects in development include 100 Nights of Hero, I Want Your Sex, and Cathy Yan's thriller film The Gallerist which co-stars Jenna Ortega, among others.
Earlier this year, Deadline reported that Focus Features were nearing a deal to produce a new Audition remake, adapting the 1997 Japanese novel by Ryū Murakami, also the basis for Miike's 1999 movie. The upcoming Audition film will be written and directed by Danish filmmaker Christian Tafdrup who plans to co-write with his brother Mads Tafdrup. Previously, even Kevin Bacon voiced a desire to remake Audition.
The reception to Charli xcx's acting pivot has been with mixed reactions, but she's hardly the first singer-turned-actress out there. Notably, Ariana Grande has shifted gears toward acting lately as have plenty of other artists like Lady Gaga, Jared Leto, Cher, and more. It'll be interesting to see how Charli xcx does in her first project, but I think the horror genre is a good pick for her and I'm curious to see what becomes of this collab with Miike.
