Major spoilers for Companion below

Companion has been largely praised as one of 2025's first great horror movies. A sci-fi thriller, the film follows a man named Josh (Jack Quaid) who takes his robot girlfriend Iris (Sophie Thatcher) to a retreat with his friends, including Kat (Megan Suri) and Eli (Harvey Guillén), who also happens to have a "companion" named Patrick (Lukas Gage).

The film reveals pretty early on that Iris is an android and once we know that it starts to make sense why Josh brought her to this house. The owner, a man named Sergey (Rupert Friend), had been dating Kat. Josh and Kat discovered that Sergey had millions of dollars stowed in his house and assumed he was part of the mob or something else nefarious.

Josh changes Iris's settings to allow for violence and then he and Kat set her up to be assaulted by Sergey. When that happens, she murders him, which we learn was all part of Josh and Kat's plan so they could blame the whole thing on Iris going rogue and then take all of his money and escape.

But things don't go entirely according to plan.

A wrench in the works

When the Empathix company arrives at Sergey's house to take Iris away, Josh gets a brutal wake-up call. It turns out that the companions don't "die" from a shot in the head because all of their important bits are stored in the torso. So, even though Iris is temporarily shutdown after Josh forces her to shoot herself in the head, the Empathix workers inform Josh they can swiftly get her up and running again.

It's a good thing, too, since she records everything that happens around her, which will allow them to verify Josh's story about what happened with Sergey (and Eli and Kat, who get murdered by Iris and Patrick, respectively). But of course, we know Josh was lying and soon the workers will, too. He can't have that, so he sends Patrick out to kill them and retrieve Iris's body so he can dispose of her properly.

Patrick swiftly kills one of the workers and then sets his sights on the other, a guy named Teddy. Luckily for Teddy, they had already hooked Iris up again so she wakes up and is able to stop Patrick from killing him. She gets through to Patrick that Josh used him, replacing Eli in his mind with himself. Iris reminds Patrick that due to her system reboot, she cannot lie and Patrick realizes he's telling the truth. Understanding that Eli is dead, and overcome with grief, Patrick kills himself with an electric prod.

A thankful Teddy helps Iris jailbreak her systems so she can have complete autonomy.

Iris and Josh have one final showdown

Now that she can no longer be controlled by any app, Iris returns to Sergey's house to confront Josh one last time. They get into a violent altercation as they try killing each other.

Even though Iris isn't controllable anymore, Josh is still cocky enough to exert control over her, baiting Iris by saying she won't let herself kill him because she still loves him. It works enough for him to knock her flat on the ground where he forces to say, "You were everything to me," but Iris finally gets the upper hand and murders Josh by shoving an electric wine opener into the side of his head.

In the final scenes of the film, Iris takes Sergey's millions of dollars and heads home. In the shower, she peels the synthetic skin that has burned to a crisp off of her arm (from when Josh forced her to hold her hand over a candle) and marvels at the tech beneath. The last we see of Iris, she's driving somewhere new and notices another human/companion couple in a car near hers. She waves with her robo-hand, signifying that she's fully embracing her robot side.
