RLJE Films and Shudder are collaborating again to bring us the sci-fi horror film Ash, a claustrophobic new thriller about two people whose survival hinges upon their ability to trust one another.
Variety reports that Ash stars 3 Body Problem star Eiza González and Aaron Paul of Westworld and Breaking Bad fame. Set on a mysterious planet, a woman wakes up to discover that her entire crew has been slaughtered, and the only person who can seemingly help her figure out what happened is a man named Brion (Paul). Together, the duo must face "an ordeal of psychological and physical terror" while figuring out whether or not the other person is really on their side.
Ash is directed by Grammy-winning filmmaker and musician Steven Ellison, also known as Flying Lotus. Ellison's previous feature was the experimental film Kuso. Ellison wrote the script and composed the score for Kuso and has done the same thing with his newest film.
The director spoke with Hypebeast about Ash, revealing that this one is a more traditional narrative film than his previous project, calling it a "real production" that took place in New Zealand. Ash is one of many sci-fi horror movies currently on track to be released in 2025. The film will be in good company with other highly anticipated releases like Companion, M3GAN 2.0, and The Bride!.
Apart from González and Paul, Ash stars Iko Uwais (The Expendables 4), Beulah Koale (Thank You For Your Service), Kate Elliott (Wentworth), and Andrew B. Miller (Avatar: The Way of Water). Ellison also has a role in the film.
Shudder also recently acquired the body horror film The Ugly Stepsister, a twist on the classic tale of Cinderella set to premiere at the Sundance Festival early next year.
RLJE Films and Shudder will release Ash in theaters on March 21, 2025, and then it will likely stream on Shudder at a later date.
