Spoilers ahead for Fear Street: Prom Queen

After a lengthy four-year wait, the newest movie in the Fear Street series on Netflix has been released. Unfortunately, Fear Street: Prom Queen debuted to somewhat poor reviews, especially when compared to the original trilogy.

Like the 2021 films, Prom Queen is also based on one of R.L. Stine's popular YA books, but unlike the previous movies this one is a standalone movie without any direct connections to the others. If you checked out the movie already this weekend, you might still be wondering what that little mid-credits scene means for the movie and the potential for a direct sequel to the Prom Queen storyline.

To quickly recap, at the end of the movie, we find out that the masked killer is actually a family of killers, the Falconers. Tiffany's dad, Dan (Chris Klein) was one of the primary murderers at the party and when he gets caught and arrested, everyone assumes the slayings are over. Tiffany (Fina Strazza) and Lori Granger (India Fowler), even manage to put their prom queen rivalry aside as Lori accompanies Tiffany home so she won't be alone.

That's when the movie drops another twist. Tiffany's mom, Nancy (Katherine Waterston), was also one of the killers, and she's not done with Lori yet. Nancy goes after Lori, so she and Tiffany hide in a closet together. And another twist... Tiffany is on it, too! Nancy and Tiffany team up to try and take down Lori as we learn that Nancy had a thing with Lori's father, but he chose Lori's mom over her and that's why Nancy wants her dead. Nancy reveals that she was the one who killed Lori's dad all of those years ago.

Lori manages to escape from Tiffany and Nancy. She pushes Tiffany over her staircase balcony where she plummets to her death and gets impaled on a decoration. Then Lori bludgeons Nancy and escapes.

The mid-scredits scene hints at something supernatural

One of the most significant differences between Prom Queen and the preceding Fear Street movies is that this one doesn't have any supernatural connections or witchcraft. Or does it? During the mid-credits scene, Nancy is shown bleeding out on the carpet and her blood forms the shape of the Witch's Mark revealed beneath the Goode family house in Fear Street: 1666, a.k.a. the mark of Solomon Goode. The Goode family were the overarching villains of the trilogy.

You might recall that 1666 also had a brief mid-credits scene where someone off-screen steals the satanic book of black magic. The same book that Solomon used to make a deal with Satan.

According to Variety's chat with director Matt Palmer, that mid-credits scene was a leftover vestige of a previous script where the killers would have been revealed to be partaking in satanic rituals similar to the Goode family. He says at one point they ha an idea to create a follow-up movie set in the 1990s revolving around the Satanic Panic.

“We ended up just sticking to the story that’s being told, but hopefully it opens the door a little bit for the fans to link it to the first movies or potentially come up with theories for what this might mean. And then who knows? Maybe that 1990 movie might come along and could throw more light on this mysterious easter egg at the end.”

When asked if there was a possibility of a direct Prom Queen sequel happening, Palmer said, "potentially," noting that he would love to return to the series, but would also be happy to see what other filmmakers bring to the franchise.
