Netflix is bringing Fear Street back in time for the summer. On Tuesday, the streamer shared the first official teaser for the upcoming horror film, a spinoff from the initial trilogy that debuted in 2021. Like the three-week event several years ago, Prom Queen is also based on R.L. Stine's popular Fear Street book series. Releasing this May, it seems like Netflix is sticking with summer debut for this slasher franchise, which I think is a great decision.
In 1988, the prom queen candidates are all preparing for the most important social event of the year, but then the "It Girls" start getting killed off in increasingly frightening ways, leading to widespread panic and disappearances.
Netflix officially describes the movie with the following logline: "Welcome back to Shadyside. In this next installment of the blood-soaked Fear Street franchise, prom season at Shadyside High is underway and the school’s wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown. But when a gutsy outsider puts herself in the running, and the other girls start mysteriously disappearing, the class of ’88 is suddenly in for one hell of a prom night."
Watch the teaser below.
It doesn't give much away beyond giving us a peek at some of the actors and sharing a few ominous pull quotes like "nice girls don't win in Shadyside," and the warning of what's to come. Like the previous films, this one has been rated R for strong bloody violence and gore, teen drug use, language, and some sexual references.
The cast for this one is stacked, featuring several up-and-coming actresses like Ariana Greenblatt (Barbie), Ella Rubin (Anora), Suzanna Son (Red Rocket), India Fowler (The Nevers), and David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty). Other key cast members include Katherine Waterston, Chris Klein, and Lily Taylor.
Netflix also shared a few new photos from the movie, including a couple that tease the killer's appearance. It looks like whoever it is will be wearing a bright red jacket. Very Pretty Little Liars.

Prom Queen was directed by Matt Palmer, who also co-wrote the script with Donald McLeary. I have to admit, I am a little disappointed that Netflix picked a male director, especially since Leigh Janiak did a great job writing and directing the original trilogy. It would have been nice to have another female director at the helm, especially since it's a film about teenage girls.
But I'm still very excited to see this film, especially because Stine has previously said it's one of several reported Fear Street movies in development at Netflix.
Fear Street: Prom Queen officially debuts on May 23.
