Final Destination: Bloodlines is finally hitting theaters this month and it turns out that the film's directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein went to extremes to ensure this movie stands out.
According to a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, they hired 71-year-old stunt performer Yvette Ferguson to act in the film's opening scene where she is set on fire, setting a world record for "the oldest person ever on fire, on camera." Imagine putting that on your resumé.
Considering its been almost 15 years since the last Final Destination was released in theaters, it's understandable why the filmmakers would want to go all out and push boundaries for this new movie.
Lipovsky told the outlet that they set many people on fire for this movie, but Ferguson did a "full body burn in the silver dress."
The scene in question happens during the film's opening, as teased in the promotional material. It features a devastating fire taking place inside a 400-foot-tall tower with glass walls. As shown in the trailers, this tower is the setting for one of the film's trademark premonitions as a character, Brec Bassinger's Iris, has a vision of the tower collapsing and one of the victims, played by Ferguson, catches on fire in the catastrophe.
Bassinger was present for the stunt and told EW that "it was beautiful" and everyone was very excited for Ferguson, clapping for the actress once she was finished.
Fans should be excited for that awesome opening as, in addition to the record-breaking flames, it features one of the most elaborate sets in the entire movie with multiple sets combined into one.
Final Destination as a franchise is known for its elaborate death sequences, so the directors wanted to ensure fans would get to see plenty of incredible feats and moments in this film. Expect to see a lot of practical effects and the moments of death in their full glory as these R-rated movies enjoy reveling in each character's final moments rather than cutting away from the action.
Releasing in theaters on May 16, Final Destination: Bloodlines follows a young woman who foretells her family's deaths and tries to find someone to help her prevent the terrifying chain of events from unfolding. The late Tony Todd reprises his role as William Bludworth. Other actors in the cast include Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Richard Harmon, Teo Briones, Owen Patrick Joyner, and Anna Lore.
