In this article, we’ve rounded up five must-see A24 horror films you absolutely can’t miss, along with two that might be better left skipped. Whether you're looking for a new favorite or just trying to dive into A24's horror offerings, we’ve got you covered.
Midsommar (2019)
- Director and writer: Ari Aster
- Verdict: Watch
- Where to watch: Available to rent or buy on digital retailers
Most people know Florence Pugh for starring as Yelena Belova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Others might recognize her from her roles in movies like Little Women, Don't Worry Darling, Dune: Part Two and We Live in Time. But horror fans know her for starring in horror films such as Malevolent and A24's Midsommar. Midsommar is hands down one of the best folk horrors. Pugh stars as an American student named Dani.
After the tragic loss of her family, Dani joins her boyfriend Christian and his friends on a trip to Sweden to attend a secluded midsummer festival at a remote rural village. But what starts as a seemingly harmless trip quickly takes a horrifying turn with the village's customs and rituals becoming increasingly disturbing.
Hereditary (2018)
- Director and writer: Ari Aster
- Verdict: Watch
- Where to watch: Netflix
Toni Collette is already an incredible actress, but her outstanding performance in Hereditary just reminded us of her unparalleled range and depth. She stars in the psychological horror as miniature artist Annie Graham. Following the death of her enigmatic mother, Annie and her family try their best to navigate their grief. However, as strange and unsettling occurrences start to disrupt their lives, Annie finds herself forced to confront unsettling family secrets that have been buried for years.
Talk to Me (2022)
- Director and writer: Ti West
- Verdict: Watch
- Where to watch: Netflix, Paramount+
Talk to Me is not only one of A24's standout horror films, but it’s also considered by many to be one of the best supernatural horrors of the decade. It stars Sophie Wilde as Mia, a teenage girl struggling with the recent death of her mother. When Mia and her classmates discover a peculiar embalmed hand that allows them to communicate with spirits, they see it as a thrilling way to connect with the supernatural. However, things take a dark turn when they accidentally unleash evil forces into the real world.
The Front Room (2024)
- Directors and writers: Max Eggers and Sam Eggers
- Verdict: Skip
- Where to watch: Max
Remember when I mentioned that A24 rarely misses? Well, The Front Room is one of those rare exceptions. I had high hopes for this psychological horror, but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to expectations. The film stars Brandy Norwood and Andrew Burnap as Belinda and Norman, a young married couple eagerly awaiting the arrival of their first child. However, things take a dark turn when Norman’s ill stepmother, Solange, comes to stay with them, setting off a chain of events that spirals out of control.
Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)
- Director: Halina Reijn
- Writer: Sarah DeLappe
- Verdict: Watch
- Where to watch: Available to rent or purchase on digital platforms
Whenever you need a good laugh, Bodies Bodies Bodies is the perfect choice. The horror comedy revolves around a group of friends who decide to gather at a remote mansion during a hurricane. What starts as a lively evening of drinking and dancing quickly turns into chaos when the group plays a party game that takes a deadly turn.
X (2022)
- Director and writer: Ti West
- Verdict: Watch
- Where to watch: Max
X is my personal favorite in Ti West's X trilogy. As the first installment in the series, it follows a group of actors and crew members who travel to an elderly couple's farmhouse to shoot an adult film, only to eventually discover that the couple isn't as harmless as they appear. The couple begins brutally murdering the cast and crew one by one, putting them in a desperate fight for survival.
MaXXXine (2024)
- Director and writer: Ti West
- Verdict: Skip
- Where to watch: Max
I was eagerly anticipating MaXXXine as it would be the final film to conclude the X trilogy. However, it didn't quite live up to the expectations set by its predecessors. The plot was all over the place, and everything felt rushed and incomplete. This movie was supposed to end the film series off with a bang, but all it did was leave me feeling underwhelmed and disappointed.
MaXXXine sees the return of Maxine Minx, played by Mia Goth. It's the '80s, and Maxine has made her way to Los Angeles, hoping to finally make it big in Hollywood as an actress. But she finds her plans derailed when she becomes the target of a mysterious killer and her dark past begins to resurface.
