In 2026, Rob Zombie’s Halloween films can kind of feel like the red-headed stepchildren of the larger franchise. The original John Carpenter 1978 film is obviously iconic, the initial run of sequels is beloved by multiple generations, and the most recent batch of legacy sequels lives fresh in the minds of audiences. But in between those two sets of films, in the mid-‘00s, the Halloween franchise got the exact same treatment that every other mainline horror franchise got around the time: a remake. In fact, when it released in 2007, Rob Zombie’s Halloween was so successful that the studio quickly greenlit a sequel, in the form of 2009’s Halloween 2.
Halloween 2 was a weirder, wilder, and altogether far more interesting film than its predecessor, so it makes complete sense that general audiences were not fans of it. As a result, plans to make a third installment in the remake series stalled out, and the Halloween series as a whole was ultimately put on ice for more than a decade. Today, the perception of these two Rob Zombie-directed entries is predominantly that they were strange if enjoyable oddities. Now, the two headlining performers from those films, Scout Taylor-Compton and Danielle Harris, are returning to the screen, not just as scream queens once more, but also as writers and directors with their new film, Last Chance Motel.
In Zombie’s Halloween films, Taylor-Compton succeeded Jamie Lee Curtis in the role of Laurie Strode before Curtis then succeeded Taylor-Compton three more times a decade later. Harris, meanwhile, played the role of Annie, one of Laurie’s best friends, who was played by Nancy Kyes in the original film. Notably, Harris had previously appeared in multiple Halloween films, having starred as Jamie Strode (Laurie’s secret daughter) in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers in the late ‘80s. This led to the role of Annie being expanded upon by Zombie, who even went so far as to keep her alive through the first movie and into the sequel, a notable change from the source material.
Some of the best stuff in Zombie’s films is Taylor-Compton and Harris sharing the screen together, as the two clearly had palpable chemistry and worked incredibly well alongside one another. To this end, it honestly rules that the two are now architecting their own on-screen reunion. Taylor-Compton and Harris serve as the sole credited writers and directors of Last Chance Motel, a horror movie about a wedding weekend in a mysterious motel that goes horribly wrong. The trailer was just released and showcases Taylor-Compton and Harris’ involvement, both in front of and behind the camera.
Honestly, it looks solid, and I am excited to see what these two have cooked up.
