For fans of the Halloween franchise, this past weekend was a monumental occasion, as it marked the release of the long-awaited Halloween: The Game. After years of development, the video game has finally hit the market and is allowing players to fully immerse themselves in the world of Halloween night 1978, as the game is set entirely during the events of John Carpenter’s original film. However, it would appear that in remaining so faithful to recreating that time period and aesthetic, there may have been more than a few details that didn’t entirely jive with 2026 sensibilities.
One of these has garnered much attention, and that is the existence of a sex-based mini-game within the gameplay. Halloween: The Game allows players to not only get chased by the Boogeyman himself, Michael Myers, and attempt to combat him, but also to partake in other franchise staples, such as smoking weed or having premarital sex. These extracurricular activities exist as mini-games within the larger story of the game, and one of them has been met with an immense level of pushback and controversy.
It should be mentioned that Halloween: The Game is not particularly explicit in regard to its sexual material. The mini-game that existed upon launch saw the digital avatars of the characters going inside of a closet and having sex essentially entirely off-screen, with players minimally involved. It was clearly meant to be more of a gag than anything else, but an element that apparently went unanticipated in all of this was the fact that players could theoretically be playing as a blend of adults and underage teenagers, making for some legally dubious sex scenes within the narrative.
It wasn’t long after the game launched that clips began to go viral online showing the beloved character of Dr. Loomis (played by Donald Pleasance in the films), who is a sixty-year-old man, engaging in the sex mini-game with some of the teenage girl characters. In response to some pushback to this, the development team behind Halloween: The Game opted to pull the mini-game altogether and issue a public apology, all of which has been covered by major publications across the country.
While the game has been updated to remove the scene, the game’s developers IllFonic have yet to release a statement addressing the mini-game and its removal. We'll see if they address the removal or choose to avoid addressing it via a statement. Either way, it's certainly created conversations about the game.
