The Conjuring: Last Rites just opened in theaters, and it’s safe to say that the latest film in The Conjuring Universe is a huge hit. It has grossed well over $194 million so far, which is above and beyond what was even expected.

It’s entirely possible that the popularity of The Conjuring: Last Rites is the reason that there have been some advancements made in HBO Max’s proposed The Conjuring series, which has been in discussion since 2023.

As reported in Variety, Nancy Won has been chosen as writer, producer and showrunner, and Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires will also be writing. Won could be a good choice, since she has worked on series such as Jericho and Supernatural. And Cameron and Squires were both writers for WandaVision and Agatha All Along.

Unfortunately, we don’t know anything else about the series (including a proposed release date) except that it is expected to either continue the Warrens’ story, or possibly serve as a prequel.

In the films, we were treated to the details (some fictionalized, other not) of several of their more infamous cases. 2013’s The Conjuring introduced us to the Perron family, who moved into a Rhode Island farmhouse in 1971, only to quickly discover they weren’t alone in the house.

The Conjuring 2 was released in 2016, and it took the Warrens to England in an attempt to help the Hodgson family, who was being tormented by a poltergeist in the Endfield haunting case.

The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It made its debut in 202. It was based on the case of Arne Johnson, who stabbed his landlord Alan Bono to death, later claiming that he was demonically possessed when he committed the murder.

And The Conjuring: Last Rites, which is reportedly the last of the films, focuses on the Smurl family, who claimed their Pennsylvania home was haunted by a terrifying presence.

Altogether, The Conjuring films have made around $2.6 billion worldwide (so far)…and that’s not even counting the spinoffs. Said spinoffs include The Nun and The Nun II, Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation and Annabelle Comes Home. None of them did as well as The Conjuring films, but they were still popular with film-goers.

With the most recent film featuring flashback scenes of Ed and Lorraine in their younger years, it might be interesting to go back in time for the HBO Max series. Maybe Madison Lawlor and Orion Smith, who played the younger Warrens could join the series. It would be fascinating to explore Ed and Lorraine Warren’s earlier years, including other hauntings they investigated.
