Fred was living a secret double life as a serial killer
Nancy thought she knew her husband well, but she couldn't have been more wrong. Fred worked as an optometrist and attended several work conferences throughout the year. Nancy never thought twice about these trips, trusting him completely. That's until one day, when Fred comes home from a work conference and Nancy finds a receipt in his pockets that contradicts the details he had given about one of his trips, suggesting he may not have been where he claimed to be. Convinced he’s been cheating on her, Nancy embarks on a relentless search to uncover the truth with her co-worker Dave tagging along. Nancy and Dave eventually start having an affair along the way.
While snooping around Fred's room, where he’s constructed a massive model town, Nancy stumbles upon a box of Polaroid film. However, none of the photos reveal anything that suggests an affair. Determined to dig deeper, she enlists Dave’s help to break into Fred's office at work, where they uncover photos of unfamiliar houses, leaving Nancy even more confused and questioning what Fred is truly hiding.
After Fred leaves for another conference in Greenville, Nancy and Dave follow him to see if they can catch him in the act and to find more evidence. At this point in the film, Nancy and Dave want to be together and are hoping to find proof that Fred has been cheating so that it won't look bad once they get together.
While Dave distracts Fred in a bar, Nancy snoops through Fred's hotel room and finds handcuffs, underwear, and dog treats. She then returns home to pick up her son Harry and continue gathering evidence on Fred. While looking over Fred's model town again, she notices something familiar from the photos she had seen earlier. She notices a house with a sign reading, "Lacey Anne for Bologna Queen." Intrigued, she tracks down the real Lacey, only to learn that Lacey was murdered three years ago.
Nancy then uncovers that each zipcode on Fred's model town plans corresponds to locations where women were murdered. She realizes in this moment that the model town is some sort of chilling tribute to the victims Fred has killed throughout his hidden life. Meanwhile, Dave covertly follows Fred to a woman's house. Believing he’s finally caught Fred in the act, Dave is shocked when he enters the home and finds Fred in the middle of murdering the woman. The two engage in a struggle that results in Dave stabbing Fred. Dave flees, trying to escape by boat, but Fred catches up to him, stopping him in his tracks. In a final confrontation, Dave manages to overpower Fred, causing him to fall into the water. Dave then returns to Holland to meet up with Nancy.
He deceives her, telling her that Fred chose to leave after his hidden double life was exposed, though that’s not the truth. Trusting him, Nancy believes his story, and together they decide to move forward with their lives. But everything goes left during Holland’s Tulip Time festival. Dave spots a very much alive Fred in the crowd, and Nancy soon learns from her friends that they had seen him too. In a panic, Nancy takes Harry to a motel to escape. Dave follows them, urging Nancy to call the police, but a struggle breaks out, and in the chaos, a TV falls on Dave's head.
Fred arrives at the motel and manipulates Nancy and Harry into agreeing to leave with him and start anew. However, Nancy has a plan of her own. Unbeknownst to Fred, she’s armed with Dave’s gun, and when the moment is right, she takes aim and pulls the trigger. Though the shot doesn’t kill him, it takes off most of his cheek and ear. Nancy then finishes the job by relentlessly beating him with a clog to death.
Nancy and Harry return to the motel room, only to find that Dave is gone. Although his whereabouts remain unknown, at least Nancy is able to find some comfort knowing that he's still alive. What happens next for Nancy and Harry is uncertain, but it's probable that they attempt to move on, leaving the dark events of the past behind them.
Holland is streaming now only on Prime Video.
