Immediately after I Know What You Did Last Summer hit theaters on July 18, there was one thing on the mind of every fan: A sequel. For summer blockbusters, that's always the hope from fans, that the movie will make enough money necessary to confirm that a sequel will be confirmed. This particular horror movie was simply begging to continue with another installment.

As of this writing, it's been less than two weeks since the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot sequel hit the big screen, and the movie has brought in a mild but still impressive worldwide gross of $46 million (and counting) against its $18 million budget. According to director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, even though the movie has broken even, it's not quite enough for a sequel... yet.

I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel still uncertain

In a social media post on July 27, Robinson answered a fan's question about whether the box office numbers were looking good enough for a sequel to get the green light. The director didn't share any false hope for fans, instead urging everyone to keep going to see the movie to help the chances of a sequel increase. It's unclear how much money Sony wants the movie to make.

"More people gotta see the movie," Robinson wrote on X (formerly Twitter). "Go see the movie or no sequel. Daddy Sony needs more people to go see it, please go see it."

Usually, there are some rumblings before a high-profile movie like this hits the big screen, or at least shortly after, about a potential sequel. But aside from Robinson's post telling fans to see the movie, there haven't been any concrete indications about what the future could hold for the horror franchise. However, the ending and mid-credits scene suggested a sequel could be in the works.

Warning: Spoilers ahead from I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025).

The end of the movie reveals that Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.) was working with Stevie (Sarah Pidgeon) as the Fisherman. While Stevie was presumed dead after Ray shot her on the boat, Ava (Chase Sui Wonders) reveals she's alive to Danica (Madelyn Cline), who also survived what looked to be fatal attack from Stevie. I Know What You Did Last Summer had two final girls.

Well, technically four final girls. In the mid-credits scene, Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) visits the home of her college roommate Karla (Brandy Norwood) after receiving a note that says "It isn't over" with a red X on Karla's face in a photo of the two of them. Karla's up for another round of battling a fisherman, suggesting I Still Know What You Did Last Summer 2.0 could very well happen.

Whether the movie crosses $100 million worldwide or not, Sony would be remiss to not a produce a sequel. I've never seen so much excitement surrounding a nostalgic slasher movie reboot sequel, not even for the revamped Scream franchise, though those were much more bankable. (Only time will tell if Scream 7 will be a hit next year.) There was so much excitement around seeing Hewitt and Prinze back on screen, and the fandom couldn't have been more giddy about Brandy or Sarah Michelle Gellar's cameos.

If fans are currently worried about the box office returns so far, just remember that the movie has plenty of time left in theaters to pick up more money, even if the momentum appears to be slowing down. In addition to seeing through its worldwide theatrical run, I Know What You Did Last Summer will also likely begin streaming on Netflix before the end of the year, and it's for sure to be a huge streaming hit, which could also help make the case for a sequel.
