Remember the jaw-dropping story of Sherri Papini, the young California mother whose disappearance became a news media sensation? Well, ID is premiering a new four-part docuseries called Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie that features interviews with Sherri herself, and it will debut at the end of this month.

On November 2, 2016, Sherri’s husband Keith came home after work, and was concerned to see no sign of his wife, and used his phone to track her location. He found Sherri’s cell phone and earbuds on the ground about a mile from the home they shared with their two young children.

Extensive media coverage began almost immediately, and only increased when Sherri showed up three weeks later, on Thanksgiving Day, about 150 miles from her last known whereabouts. She claimed to have been kidnapped, and said she was released that morning at 4:30 a.m. She was dirty, disheveled, and still wearing restraints, and had some injuries. Her claim was that she had been abducted by two Hispanic women, and repeatedly insisted there were only two abductors.

But her story was inconsistent, and law enforcement quickly began to suspect that her story was a hoax. Although her husband Keith originally believed her and defended her, the video footage of law enforcement telling her point blank that they now knew exactly how the hoax had been orchestrated (and with whom she was working), you can visibly see Keith literally move his chair away from her, because he realized she had been lying.

ID’s docuseries will feature exclusive access to Sherri, as she speaks in front of the camera for the first time since her arrest. The whole story will be covered, alternating her words with the facts of the case.

All parts of the story will be examined, starting from a few days before her disappearance, and leading up to the aftermath of her arrest in 2022. We will also bear witness to her current custody battle (Keith divorced her after her arrest).

Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie will air across two nights in May

The first two episodes will air on Monday, May 26, from 9:00 – 11:00 p.m. ET, and the remaining two episodes will debut the following night, also at 9:00 – 11:00. All episodes will also be available to stream on Max.

Others who will lend their voices to Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie include Sherri’s lawyer and psychologist, federal authorities who investigate the case, her parents and sister-in-law, a podcaster who covered the story, and many more. We will also see legal documents, court filings and archival footage, which ID claims will illuminate “an entirely different side of the story.”

Given her demeanor after her story began to fall apart, I don’t expect that she is going to apologize for and admit her wrongdoings; instead, I am sure she will deflect and continue to claim that she was being abused by Keith. But, I will definitely watch Caught in the Lie to hear what she has to say!
