The upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth seems to be doing something that most of the Jurassic World movies have avoided: making the movies scary again.
In the latest trailer for the upcoming film Universal Pictures, it feels like editing team made a concerted effort to emphasize the horror elements we'll see in the upcoming film, which takes place five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion.
Featuring terrifying mutant dinosaurs and failed experiments, Jurassic World Rebirth will push the limits of the franchise and perhaps recall the classic 1993 film, and even the novels that the series is based on by Michael Crichton.
Check out the latest trailer below.
There's at least one mutated beast that appears to be channeling a Xenomorph. The creature in question is being teased as one of the scariest in the movie, with director Gareth Edwards comparing it to designs by Swiss artist H.R. Giger, who, coincidentally, designed the Xenomorph. The creature's design was also inspired by Rancors from Star Wars. The thing has six limbs.
Before the Velociraptors became lovable with the introduction of Chris Pratt's Owen and Blue, they were genuinely scary. Remember the raptors stalking the kids in the kitchen? The first sight of the Tyrannosaurus Rex? What about the actual severed limbs?
Sure, other movies within the multi-billion dollar franchise have dabbled in scares, but as the films went on, they've leaned more into adventure than terror. It feels like Jurassic World Rebirth is trying something different. And even better, this movie sees the return of original screenwriter David Koepp to pen the script. Koepp previously wrote the scripts for Jurassic Park and (which also had that scary scene in the beginning with the little girl almost getting eaten alive by a horde of smaller dinos).
But it's Edwards as director that has me the most excited for this movie, as the director is also behind films like Godzilla (2014), The Creator, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
The story of Jurassic World Rebirth revolves around a covert expert, Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) leading a team on a top-scret mission to investigate the original island of Jurassic Park and locate several of these prehistoric beings. By using various materials harvested from these creatures, they can create a life-saving drug. Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Rupert Friend also star.
Apart from the big mutated T-Rex, other dinosaurs we will for sure see in this film are the original T-Rex and even the Spinosaurus from Jurassic Park 3. Remember the massive underwater creature known as the Mosasaur? One of those will be returning, too.
Jurassic World Rebirth will be released theatrically on July 2.
