Maika Monroe and Chloe Okuno reunite for new horror movie Brides
Get ready for a thrilling reunion in the world of horror! Scream queen Maika Monroe and talented filmmaker Chloe Okuno are set to team up again for a new horror movie called Brides. With Monroe's captivating performances and Okuno's visionary direction, we're in for a treat!
The duo previously worked together on the psychological thriller Watcher, which Okuno wrote and directed and Monroe starred in. They obviously work well together, so we expect their new project to be another masterpiece.
Brides is Okuno's next movie. She hasn't worked on any films since Watcher. Her most recent work was directing episodes of the TV shows Let the Right One In and Teacup. For Brides, she will be directing from a script she wrote, and Monroe will star. Additionally, Anthony Bregman and Stefanie Azpiazu will produce through their Likely Story film production company.
The horror flick is described as being "gothic and gory" and is reportedly in the pre-production phase of the filmmaking process, with cameras slated to start rolling sometime in spring 2025. FilmNation Entertainment will begin international sales for the film at the upcoming American Film Market, while UTA Independent Film Group is handling both global and domestic rights.
Brides is loosely based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula. So, yes, it's a vampire movie. The story takes place in Italy in the '60s, and sees Monroe play a young married woman named Sally Bishop, who catches the interest of a mysterious villa owner.
Here's a more detailed plot for the movie via Deadline:
"Set in 1960s Italy, Sally Bishop (Monroe) and her husband travel to a remote villa in the wake of Sally’s nervous breakdown. The villa’s owner, a mysterious count, takes a peculiar interest in Sally. But he gets far more than he anticipated when Sally’s feminist chaos is added to his perfect, violent Eden of vampire brides."
Here's what producer Anthony Bregman had to say about working with Okuno and Monroe on this film via Deadline:
"Brides is set to redefine the horror genre with Choe Okuno’s unique blend of feminist themes and gory visuals. The script is dynamic and unsettling in all the best ways. Chloe always brings such dread and complexity to her characters, and we can’t wait to work with her and Maika to bring Sally to life or to un-death as the case may be."
Monroe is well-known in the horror world. She's starred in several horror flicks in her acting career, such as It Follows, Villains, Significant Other and Longlegs. Besides Brides, we'll see her next in a The Hand that Rocks the Cradle remake and in a sequel to It Follows titled They Follow. No other actors have been cast yet in Brides.
