Maya is in danger yet again in first teaser for The Strangers: Chapter 2
By Mads Lennon
Maya might have safely gotten to the hospital after witnessing the brutal death of her fiancé in The Strangers: Chapter 1, but the first teaser for Chapter 2 shows that her troubles are far from over.
Taking place immediately after we last saw her in a hospital bed, Chapter 2 will see Maya having to survive the Strangers yet again. It looks like the first part of the movie will channel Halloween II, with Maya getting tormented from within the hospital itself.
On The Strangers: Chapter 1 commentary track, star Madelaine Petsch and producer Courtney Solomon noted that the three new films, which will form a reboot trilogy based on Bryan Bertino's 2008 home invasion movie of the same name, actually function like one super-long film. Instead of releasing a four-hour cut, they chopped it up into three chapters, but each movie takes place right where the previous one ended, meaning Chapter 3 will pick up wherever Chapter 2 concludes. No time skips.
Lionsgate released Chapter 1 theatrically in May of this year and it seemed like the studio wanted to get Chapter 2 out before the end of 2024. However, the teaser doesn't provide a release date for the new movie just yet. There's still time for it to come out within the next couple of months, but I'm guessing it might not be released until early 2025 at this point, with Chapter 3 aiming for a late 2025 release date.
Where did The Strangers: Chapter 1 leave us?
At the end of The Strangers: Chapter 1, Maya is forced to watch as the three strangers, Scarecrow, Dollface, and Pin-Up Girl, kill Ryan (Froy Gutierrez). They also stab her and leave her for dead, but like in the original 2008 film, Maya survives.
One of the biggest criticisms of Chapter 1 is the fact it doesn't really do anything new and is more or less a beat-by-beat remake of the original movie. Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 will give us the chance to see what the filmmakers have in store for this story as it moves past its source material.
The teaser sets up an exciting plot as clips show Maya escaping from the hospital and eventually getting into a car with total strangers who could be the very "strangers" she's running from. Chapter 1 had a post-credits stinger showing Scarecrow in Maya's hospital bed. Real or imagined? We'll find out soon!
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is now streaming on Starz and available to rent or purchase physically or on VOD. Stay tuned to 1428 Elm for more updates on The Strangers reboot trilogy.
