Netflix has unveiled the trailer for upcoming true crime documentary A Deadly American Marriage, centering on the brutal killing of Jason Corbett.
Corbett was an Irish widower with two children when he married his American au pair, Molly Martens, in 2008. From the trailer Netflix shared earlier today (and embedded below), the couple had a picturesque relationship from the outside. One documentary subject says their idyllic home looked like it was doused in sunlight and rainbows. But inside, the family's story told a different tale.
Corbett and Martens moved into a North Carolina home together along with Corbett's two kids, Jack and Sarah. Fast-forward to 2015 when something happened at their home leading to a violent confrontation and Corbett's death at the hands of his wife and her father, former FBI agent Thomas Martens.
As you can see, it's a chilling story and one of the investigators on the scene describes it as one of the bloodiest crime scenes they'd ever seen. The trailer opens with harrowing audio from the night's 911 call that supposedly spurned Molly's father into action. It also teases more reveals and information coming from the kids, some of whom dispute Molly's side of the story. A detective claims they have unearthed secret recordings that could shed light on what happened that fateful night of August 2, 2015.
Although Molly and Thomas claimed they had acted in self defense, on counts of voluntary manslaughter Molly pled no contest and her father pleaded guilty, per AP News. The outlet notes that this came "two years after the North Carolina Supreme Court reversed their 2017 second-degree murder convictions and ordered a new trial."
The pair were later released from jail in June 2024 and some have wondered whether they should have been their in the first place.
According to investigators, Molly and Thomas used a brick paver and an aluminum baseball bat to commit the act of murder, though their lawyers have said they were in fear for their lives during the fight with Corbett. Thomas previously claimed the confrontation started after he saw Corbett choking his daughter and opted to intervene.
A Deadly American Marriage will thoroughly examine the evidence along with presenting new perspectives from those closely involved with the case. The film comes from director Jessica Burgess (American Monster) and Jenny Popplewell (What Jennifer Did).
Tudum shares that among the new interviews shared in the doc, we will see "exclusive interviews with Molly, Thomas, Jack, and Sarah."
A Deadly American Marriage premieres on May 9 on Netflix.
