We've been writing plenty of articles about the various psychological thrillers and horror movies available on Netflix and other streaming services, but the latest is one of the most surprising.
On March 7, Netflix released another movie about the perils of rich people and class warfare, the "eat the rich" subgenre as it has fittingly come to be known. Delicious is a German Netflix Original and it goes to some surprisingly dark places. But admittedly, Delicious isn't quite as good as the other movies mentioned, lacking some of the same sharpness and tension.
Still, it's worth a watch if you enjoy those types of films, especially since it feels as timely as ever amidst the backdrop of the current global and political landscape.
What is Delicious about?
A German family consisting of a mother and father, plus two children, are on vacation at a picturesque and lavish villa where they're attended to by a myriad of service workers, notably a maid named Teodora. But one night while driving along the dark roads, the family gets into an accident, clipping Teodora who just happens to be out in the middle of the road. She gets an injury that allows her to ingratiate herself in with the various family members.
Delicious makes it clear from the start that Teodora and her friends have ulterior motives toward the wealthy hotel clientele they despise. The film's opening scene shows one of her friends peeing into a champagne bottle and replacing it in the room they've been cleaning.
So it's not a spoiler to say that Teodora intentionally picks this family as her mark. She then cuts herself and positions herself on the road to ensure that the car "hits" her and therefore forces them to take care of her.
The interesting part of the film is trying to figure out exactly what Teodora intends to do with this family and how it's going to play out. Given the movie's title and the comparisons I made above, most people can probably guess where all this is going to lead to by the film's final act.
It's not super gory but it is quite disturbing and twisted, especially if you don't realize what's happening until the climax unravels. And the final scene of the film is particularly gross and quite chilling. I won't go into detail about that but let's just say the son finds himself indulging in an unforgettable meal.
Delicious is now streaming on Netflix.
