Fans are more than ready to return to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza to see what fresh horrors and animatronic nightmares await in the next installment of Five Nights at Freddy's. If the thrilling teaser is anything to go by, then I'd say we're in for a terrifying experience that ramps up the tension, with even more chilling animatronic encounters in Five Nights at Freddy's 2, which is slated to be released in theaters on Dec. 5, 2025.
And lucky for us, we might not be saying goodbye to this horror world just yet after its second movie. Back in September 2024, there was a rumor swirling around that a Five Nights at Freddy's 3 was in early development. This rumor came from Daniel Richtman, @DanielRPK on X, a known entertainment industry insider. However, keep in mind that Blumhouse Productions nor Universal Pictures have confirmed a third film.
But there's a good chance a second sequel could happen, given that Matthew Lillard previously stated in a 2023 interview that he had signed on for a three-picture deal with Blumhouse and Universal Pictures for this horror franchise. Lillard stars as the main antagonist in the supernatural horror film, Steve Raglan/William Afton.
We later learned from a FNAF fan on X (@Katsterlingfan) in January 2025 that production on a potential third movie would be starting six months after the second film's release and that the movie's release could be aimed for 2027, possibly late in the year. However, the insider cautioned fans not to fully rely on their report until there's official confirmation. Now, we've just learned from Richtman that the cameras are reportedly set to start rolling on a potential Five Nights at Freddy's 3 sometime later this year. He also reports that even though there were initial plans to make Five Nights at Freddy's into a trilogy, the filmmakers or studio are now thinking about or considering making a fourth movie in the series.
As always, these are just rumors. Nothing has been confirmed by the studios or the movie's creative team. However, we can definitely see a Five Nights at Freddy's 4 happening if the potential third film does well at the box office. The source material is there, so that shouldn't be a problem. We just need that official green light. But for now, we'll just have to look forward to seeing Five Nights at Freddy's 2 on the big screen this December.
Plot details are still being kept secret on the second film, but fans can expect to see Mike, his younger sister Abby, and local police officer Vanessa take on new animatronic threats. Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard all return in their roles from the first film. Additionally, Wayne Knight, Mckenna Grace, and Teo Briones join the sequel's cast.
