The fifth season of True Detective is in development and we're finally learning more about what to expect from the next season of the acclaimed crime anthology. Last year's True Detective: Night Country became the top-viewed season of the entire show and significant praise for its leads Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, in addition to showrunner Issa López, who will return as the showrunner and lead writer for the fifth season.

According to a new report from Deadline, the fifth season will take place in the Jamaica Bay area of New York, located at the southwestern tip of Long Island. Filming for the new season will get underway within the next few months and casting has started, though no actors have been announced for the project yet.

The news comes from a conversation with Francesca Orsi, HBO's Head of Drama Series. Orsi is currently doing promo for the upcoming season of another hit HBO anthology series, The White Lotus.

“Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful,” Orsi told the outlet.

Even though filming will reportedly get underway this year, the next season will not debut on HBO until 2027, so we've still got a long wait ahead of us to see what López and her writer's room have cooked up. Based on Orsi comments to Deadline, it sounds like the entire season has already been written and the network has started giving notes on specific episodes.

Back in December, López spoke with the New York Post and teased what fans should expect from season 5, noting that there will be connections to what happened in Ennis, Alaska, although the cast is all new. She also promised that there will be some "really f – – ked up stuff," something fans of the show have come to expect.

Night Country followed Foster and Reis' characters, Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro, as they investigated the mysterious disappearance of several scientists from a research station in Ennis with nothing but the severed tongue from a missing woman left behind at the scene.

It became the most nominated season of the show at the Primetime Emmys with 19 nominations in all. Foster won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Anthology.

All four seasons of True Detective are now streaming on Max. Stay tuned to 1428 Elm for more updates on the fifth season and all things horror.
