A unique folk horror film following a family vacation to a remote Swedish island gone terribly wrong, Get Away is making its streaming debut next month! The IFC film is still playing in select theaters as part of its limited release, but those who can't find a cinema featuring the movie near them can soon watch it on Shudder on Friday, January 10, 2025.
Nick Frost, the English comedian and actor known for films like Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, plays a family man embarking on a much-needed getaway alongside his loved ones, unaware that the island where they're headed has a dark history featuring sinister rituals and traditions. There's also the fact that a serial killer happens to be loose on the island at the same time they're visiting.
Get Away was directed by Steffen Haars, a founding member of the Dutch comedy group "New Kids." He and Frost collaborated on this hilariously dark and bloody film, with Frost serving as the screenwriter in addition to starring. Other cast members include Aisling Bea, Maisie Ayres, and Eero Milonoff. Netflix subscribers might recognize star Sebastian Croft from Heartstopper.
Initially released in theaters in early December, Get Away is one of several notable horror movies making its way to Shudder in January. Other films we'll be keeping an eye out for include the body horror Grafted and Dark Match starring WWE Superstar Chris Jericho. Frost also stars in another recent movie added to Shudder, Black Cab, where he plays a disturbing cab driver who kidnaps a young couple.
With its folk horror vibes and many twists and turns, Get Away has been favorably compared to films like Midsommar and Sightseers. But it also has a lot of humor and leans heavily into its dark comedy roots.
