This January, we've seen several great horror movies drop on Netflix. One that came as a complete surprise is the 2023 box-office hit Scream VI, which was released on the streaming platform on Jan. 25 and has already become a hit with viewers. As of Jan. 27, this iconic slasher ranks at the No. 2 spot on Netflix's top 10, making it one of the most popular movie titles streaming on the platform at the moment.
Honestly, I’d go as far as to say Scream VI is one of the best slashers ever made. While I’m a fan of its predecessor, Scream (2022), and all previous films in the series, Scream VI really took things to the next level with its heightened stakes, nonstop suspense, clever and unexpected twists, brutal kills, and plenty of edge-of-your-seat moments. And let's not forget the incredible cast, each delivering top-notch performances! Of course, two of the main cast members we're talking about are Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. They should definitely be recognized for their exceptional portrayals.
Scream VI took the beloved slasher franchise to a new location: New York City. All the surviving characters from Scream return but find themselves in even more danger than before, with there being a new Ghostface killer on the loose. A year has passed since the Woodsboro killings, and Sam, Tara, and their group of friends have moved to the Big Apple in hopes of a fresh start. However, their plans are quickly derailed when a new Ghostface emerges, stalking them through the city's crowded streets and dark alleyways.
Alongside Barrera and Ortega, the cast of Scream VI includes Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra, Samara Weaving, Hayden Panettiere, and Courteney Cox. However, while Neve Campbell returned as Sidney Prescott in Scream (2022), she did not reprise her role in Scream VI. This was reportedly due to a salary dispute. While her absence was felt, it did not diminish the film’s impact. The rest of the cast stepped up to fill the void and delivered standout performances that kept the intensity and suspense at full throttle.
We also have to give props to Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who directed the slasher, and James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, who wrote the script. If it weren't for them, Scream VI wouldn't have reached the heights it did. Their direction and writing breathed new life into the franchise, and that's why Scream VI stands out as one of the best installments in the series.
Check out the two thrilling trailers below and tell me this slasher isn't worth checking out!
Since Scream VI is a licensed movie, it will not remain on Netflix forever. That's why it's important to watch it while you can, or even consider adding it to your watchlist so you don't miss out before it leaves the platform. Currently, the film doesn’t have a set departure date, but rest assured, we’ll update you as soon as Netflix announces one.
With there being a Scream 7 in the works, stay tuned to 1428 Elm as we'll also be sharing new updates on this highly anticipated film!
