Osgood Perkins is proving to be quite the profitable filmmaker for Neon. His latest movie, the dark comedy/horror film The Monkey has earned over $14.2 million over its opening weekend, making it the second-best opening ever for Neon, reports Deadline.
Funnily enough, the only person Perkins' seems to be in competition with right now is, well, himself. Neon's current highest earning film is Longlegs, which raked in over $126.9 million on a budget of under $10 million, making it especially profitable for the production company. It became Neon's highest-grossing movie domestically and the highest-grossing indie movie of 2024.
Both Longlegs and The Monkey were acclaimed by critics, each earning a Certified Fresh seal of approval from Rotten Tomatoes, although Longlegs has a higher approval rate at 86% vs. The Monkey's 78%.
Of interest is the aggregator's audience score, which is exactly 61% for both films. Although Perkins' films have been a hit with film critics so far, audience opinions are more divisive. Both films also received a C+ from CinemaScore. It's clear that Perkins' is another horror filmmaker who enjoys pushing boundaries and making unconventional films that defy audience expectations.
Next up for Perkins is the horror movie Keeper starring Tatiana Maslany. Releasing this October, Keeper appears to be tonally similar to Perkins previous movies, Longlegs and The Blackcoat's Daughter. So if you didn't really enjoy the comedy in The Monkey then Keeper might be more your speed.
It'll be interesting to see if Keeper will break records like its predecessors, leading to a trifecta of wins for the director. Little is known about the next movie in Perkins' filmography except that it stars Tatiana Maslany as a wife whose husband leaves her behind in their vacation cabin. Alone, she must contend with a sinister presence.
The Monkey included a very brief teaser for Keeper instead of a traditional post-credits scene. It looks terrifying and like it will deliver an incredible performance from Maslany (who also starred in The Monkey).
For those who haven't seen The Monkey yet, it is currently playing in theaters.
