Now that we're headed into mid-September, the fall television season is starting to heat up, which perfectly coincides with the onset of Halloween season. This week gets off to a strong start with the premiere of Food Network's popular baking show, Halloween Baking Championship, now in its tenth season. Plus, exciting new shows like Agatha All Along and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story premiere later this week!
On the theatrical side, major releases this week include Alexandre Aja's survival horror film Never Let Go, starring Halle Berry, and the acclaimed body horror flick The Substance. Demi Moore stars in the movie directed by Coralie Fargeat, and many critics have called her performance in The Substance career-defining.
Here's what to keep an eye out for on the horror side of things this week!
Halloween Baking Championship season 10 (Food Network, Sept. 16)
The tenth season of this festive Food Network staple kicks off tonight, September 16, at 9/8c. Meet the ten bakers competing for the title this year in a mad scientist-themed season. The premiere tasks the bakers with making broken glass desserts and, next week, a fun Beetlejuice tie-in.
The Substance (Theaters, Sept. 20)
Acclaimed director Coralie Fargeat (Revenge) returns with her highly-anticipated body horror starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. Moore plays an aging aerobics instructor desperate to reclaim her youth after she's unexpectedly fired. She takes a mysterious substance that will supposedly turn her into an enhanced version of herself, with nightmarish results.
Never Let Go (Theaters, Sept. 20)
Crawl director Alexandre Aja returns with this survival horror film starring Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry. Set in a world where a mysterious evil plagues the survivors, a single mother must do whatever it takes to protect her family and prevent them from getting taken, even if that means using tethers to keep them all connected and safe at home. But when one of her sons becomes skeptical of the "evil," she'll find herself tested in new and frightening ways.
Agatha All Along (Disney+, Sept. 18)
Kathryn Hahn returns as the wicked witch Agatha Harkness in this upcoming Disney+ Marvel series with a dark twist. Given all the witchcraft and the creepy vibes of the trailer, Agatha All Along looks like a bold, fun, and mature new series in the MCU. A WandaVision spinoff, the show picks up with Agatha having lost her powers after facing off against the Scarlet Witch. She looks to form a new coven and head down the Witches' Road to get them back.
Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story (Netflix, Sept. 19)
True crime enthusiasts will want to keep tabs on this follow-up to Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. This time around, the Ryan Murphy series will cover the highly publicized case of the Menendez brothers, Erik and Lyle, who were charged with murdering their parents José and Mary Louise "Kitty" Menendez. Monsters will investigate the brothers' claims that they were abused for years at home, which ultimately led to the murders.
